“We don’t mean to keep you and Nick on the phone with us for so long,” Dad says. “You two have a nice weekend. I love you, Poppy.”
“Love you too, Dad.”
“Love you, darling.”
“Love you, Mom.”
When I hang up, Nick cradles my face in his hands. “How are you feeling?”
I let out a soft sigh. “Honestly? Totally shocked. But in the best way. I didn’t think my dad would ever do that.”
Nick smiles softly. “I’m glad he did. I’m glad things are good between you two. And your mom.”
“Me too.” I drop a soft kiss to his mouth. “You were so kind and gracious to him. You didn’t have to be.”
He just shrugs. “Dads are protective of their daughters. Honestly, I understand why he wasn’t happy to see us together. You’re a genius. I’m a dumbass hockey player.”
I chuckle and lightly smack his shoulder. “Quit saying that,” I say.
He just grins. “It’s true. He just wants the best for you. Yeah, he went about it in the wrong way. He was definitely a jerk. But he apologized. He sounded truly sorry. I respect him for realizing that he was wrong and doing whatever it took to make it right.”
I kiss him. This man. He’s so kind and understanding. So perfect.
I love him so much.
“You’re amazing,” I murmur against his mouth.
He pulls me onto his lap. I straddle him and we makeout like that for a minute until his phone rings.
“Let me get rid of that,” he mutters.
He grabs his phone off the bed. When he looks at it, his eyes go wide in shock.
“Shit,” he mutters.
“What? What’s wrong?”
“Coach is calling me.”
Chapter 55
Nick
Nerves fire off inside of me. Why the hell is Coach calling me?
The worst-case scenario pops into my head. He’s probably calling me to kick me off the team for good.
Dread drags through my gut.
“You should probably answer it,” Poppy says softly.
I swallow back the anxious feeling bubbling up inside of me. “Yeah, you’re right.”
She moves off my lap and starts to stand up to leave, but I grab her hand.
“Stay with me?” I ask.
She nods, her expression warms. She sits back on the bed and holds my hand.
