Duncan wanted to say how he didn’t need a fucking drink, but he also knew it would have fallen on deaf ears. Just like his words had fallen on deaf ears with his own mother. He turned to the bedside table and poured a glass of water, fished a pill out of the drawer.
“Here…”
Spencer pushed himself up, grimacing. “Something stronger?” His trembling hand took the glass.
Fuck.“Ok…”
Duncan rose and walked to the bar, hesitating, but then he poured a small finger of whiskey, filling it with ice too. He walked back to Spencer, handing the glass to him.
“You serve my poison now?” Smiling as he leant back against the headboard.
“If it keeps you alive…”
Spencer watched the glass with a pull of his mouth. “I drink it neat.”
“Well, not now, at fucking nine something in the morning, ok? Suck on some ice cubes too, it will do you good.”
Spencer grinned, taking a sip. “I love it when you’re exasperated.”
“Glad to hear…” Fed up a bit.
Spencer patted the bed. “Come, sit.”
Duncan obeyed, facing him.
Spencer traced the veins on that large hand. “Thanks for saving my ass.”
“I might not be able to do it next time when you’re too fucked up to realize you are neck deep in some shit.”
“Yeah, I know…”
The drink had found his blood, his screaming nerves and brain.Heaven…Drinking more, that cold soothing, even if he hated ice in his whiskey. Nursing that glass. Wondering if he could ever let go, a tiny fright there even at the thought. Not even wanting to name anything because it wasn’t such a big deal, right? Glancing at Duncan, that tiny despair in his eyes.
“You’re pissed?”
“I’m worried.”
“And pissed.”
“Yeah, a bit.”
“Nobody gives a shit about me…”
“Well, I do. Fucking amazing, right?”
Spencer scoffed, that dark light in his eyes. “You’re paid to care.” A tiny bump to his heart, seeing that sullen wrath flood his grey eyes.
“I might be paid to protect you and save your ass, but I’m not paid to care. I could do my job without giving a single shit about you.”
“And why would you care? I am a walking wreck of a disaster.”
“I’m asking myself this question a lot too.”
“I’m irresistible after all?” Grinning, he put the glass down, his eyes playing.
“You’re fucking poison, that’s what you are.”
Spencer took his hands and pulled him close. “I know…” Sealing Duncan’s lips, he clutched at him, pulled him on top of his body.
