“Perhaps,” I said. “That could be it. To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Do I need a reason to come and talk to my friend?” Daniel asked.
“Spill, Daniel!” I demanded.
“I was wondering if you were interested in going for a drink?” he asked.
“Of course. We can head over to the cigar club,” I said.
I walked over to my new Rolls Royce and climbed into the back. Daniel climbed in next to me, and I told my driver to take us to the club.
“Are you aware that your name is in the latest issue of Forbes?” he asked. “You’ve been featured as one of the world’s youngest billionaires.”
I shrugged. These things didn’t matter to me. They never really had. My phone rang, and I looked down to see a familiar number. It was her.
“She’s still after you?” Daniel asked. I put my phone away and looked out the car window. “She can do whatever the hell she wants. It’s over.”
It had been over for years. And I had never been happier. In fact, I wished I had taken the step earlier.
“It’s been five years,” Daniel said. “You should forget her, Gale. You need to find yourself a new woman.”
“I don’t need anyone,” I said. “I am perfectly fine the way I am. I have my law firm to concentrate on. Especially after the fiasco today.”
With that, I told him about the sudden appearance of the witness.
“Well, that’s a major mess up,” he said, whistling. “If you don’t find a way to discredit the witness, this case is as good as lost. Have you thought of buying her off? Getting her to retract her statement?”
“You know I don’t approve of such methods,” I said. “I plan on winning this fair and square, and perfectly legally. Anyway, we’ve arrived at the club. Let’s not worry about work.”
