“And he’s married?”

“Yep, and I had no idea. I guess I should’ve though. There were definitely signs, but I trusted him.”

And that’s where we all go wrong, isn’t it? We trust the people we love. We believe every word. And then we end up finding out it was nothing but lies.

“So, how’d you find out he had a wife?”

“She came into the restaurant where I worked. She’d been shopping with her friends and spotted his car. And thank goodness for that or I’m not sure how long he would’ve strung me along.”

And had I not come home on a requested leave to surprise my wife for our anniversary, I wouldn’t have known either. Kara was so good at the lie, I never saw it coming.

“So, what excuse did he give you?”

Kara’s excuse was that she didn’t want to tell me while I was deployed. She was worried I’d be so devastated that I’d get myself injured on the battlefield. But I think she was just holding out for a commitment from Davis. She wasn’t going to up and leave her comfortable life if he wasn’t going to put a ring on her finger. And I honestly think the only reason he did was because he knew it’d hurt me.

“He said he was planning on divorcing her, but work kept him too busy to find an attorney and file. Now that I caught him, he’s going through with it.”

What a crock of shit. He just wanted to have his cake and eat it too. They all fucking do.

“Hope you don’t believe any of that shit.”

“I don’t believe a single word that comes from that man’s mouth. Once my trust is broken, that’s it. But as you can see, he won’t leave me alone. He keeps showing up on campus and at work. And I don’t know how he keeps calling me and texting me. I keep blocking his number, but then a new one appears.”

That’s definitely raising my hairs. Either he’s completely in love with the girl or he’s a psycho.

“He’s most likely using an app that generates numbers. It’s hard to get the calls to stop, but at least that gives us an idea as to his next move. The next time he shows his face, I’ll handle him. And if he texts, let me know. I think we should continue with the boyfriend ruse because hopefully he’ll take the hint and move on.”

And I fucking doubt that will be the case. Personally, I think it’s going to escalate him, but if he were smart, he’d walk away.

“You really don’t have to worry yourself with this. I’m sure you have much more important things to deal with than my ex-boyfriend. I can just file a restraining order.”

Nah. That piece of paper won’t do shit. Besides, I’m more than willing to stick around for a few days and get to know this little beauty better. She’s the first woman to spike my interest since I formed a crush on Kara back in high school. I honestly never thought I’d be attracted to another woman again.

“Cops don’t do shit. And you’re important to Shayna, which means you’re under club protection. I’ll stay for as long as I’m needed to ensure you’re safe.”

“Well…thank you. I guess I should let you get to bed. Sounds like you guys drove for a long time.”

We did, and I should be exhausted, but I’ve gotten a second wind. This girl has my adrenaline pumping in parts that have been numb for a long-ass time.

“I put the blankets and pillows on the table for you. Please help yourself to food and drinks. And if you want to watch TV,I have Netflix. I’ll need to head to class early, but don’t feel like you have to rush out or anything. You can sleep for as long as you want.”

“I don’t think you’re understanding, doll. I’m going to be your bodyguard until this shit is dealt with. Where you go, I go. So, just tell me what time you need to leave, and I’ll make sure I’m up and ready.”

“Oh. Um…” She looks nervous now. “You’re going to follow me around everywhere? But what do I tell people?”

“You should tell everyone I’m your boyfriend. That way if he asks, he’ll get the right story.”

And there go her cheeks again, turning all rosy red, making her even prettier.

“I don’t think anyone is going to believe that. I mean, not because there’s anything wrong with you. But because of me. I don’t think they’ll believe that anyone as hot as you would date me. You’re like totally out of my league. And dangerous. Not that I think you’ll hurt me, but you’re one of them. And not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I’m like a Goody-Two-Shoes. Well, it’s not like I’ve never gotten into trouble in my life. But my friends don’t know that I vandalized a home when I was a kid. I mean, Jesus, I just said all of that out loud.”

Yes, she did, and I enjoyed every minute of it.

“I’m just going to shut up now.” Her mouth snaps shut, eyes as round as can be, and I can’t help my smile.

Fuck me. This girl couldn’t get any fucking cuter. And my dick isn’t even going to pretend to deny that it didn’t just perk up when she called me hot.

“I must be tired. I usually don’t ramble so much. I’m not even making any sense. I think I’ll go to bed now. Good night.”
