“Hmm,” she said, crossing her arms and peering around my bedroom with her bottom lip between her teeth.
“Go on. Don’t be shy. Look around. Open drawers. You won’t find anything from the opposite sex except that hideous ripped sweatshirt you refuse to throw away.”
“Hey. That shirt is comfortable.”
I laughed, shaking my head and standing from the bed. I padded over to my dresser and opened the bottom drawer, tossing a blue Henley and green sweatshirt to her. She caught them, holding them to her chest as I crawled back into bed.
“There. Those better be the only guy stuff at your place as well.”
“Of course, they are. Glad we’re on the same page.” A broad smile spread across her features as she clutched my clothes.
There was something so sexy about a girl wearing your clothes—havingEmmawear my clothes. The shirts hung to her knees, but when she stretched her arms above her head, the shirt rose, giving me a teasing little peek of her upper thigh. I rubbed my chest, not wanting to eventhinkabout her wearing some other guy’s shirts.
“So, what are you doing this weekend?” I asked, patting the bed in the hope that she’d give up the foolish notion ofworkand crawl back beside me.
“I’m going out with the girls tonight and probably to the beach on Saturday if the weather holds. What about you?”
“Now? I’m going to try to convince you to stay longer. Then I have a couple of jobs to check on, and after that, I’m having dinner with Mom and Maverick.”
“You are incorrigible, and you know I can’t stay.”
“Aww. You know you want to, babe. Why can’t you just call in?” I frowned, sticking my bottom lip out in what I hoped was a pouty enough face for her to see reason.
“Come on, seriously?” She rolled her eyes and cocked her hip to the side before grabbing her other tennis shoe from the opposite side of the room. “Just because you use your dick as a compass doesn’t mean we all have that luxury. You know my father probably called in a favor with the headmaster to get me the job at Cresswell Academy. The last thing I need is to give the stuffy Board of Regents reason not to consider me for a full-time position next year.”
“Yeah. Yeah. I know,” I scoffed, scratching my short beard. “Don’t get me started on your dad. Ungrateful man not appreciating his own—”
She silenced me with a look, smoothing her T-shirt and pursing her lips. I backtracked quickly before we started arguing about something we’d exhausted more times than I could count.
“Can you at least admit you’d rather stay in bed with me?”
She smiled, propping one knee on the bed and leaning forward to kiss my cheek. “I admit nothing. See you later, Miller.”
I laughed, hooking my fingers in the waistband of her jeans and tugging her closer for one last kiss. She smiled into my mouth and let her tongue dart to caress my upper lip.
Fuck. This girl.
She winked before standing, then pulled her tank top over the smooth skin of her stomach and wiggled her fingers before opening my bedroom door and sauntering into the hallway, her gorgeous hips swaying as she moved.
“Bye, Emma.”
“Oh, and sweetheart?” she mocked, turning to lean back through the doorway.
“Yes, dearest?”
She rolled her eyes and laughed. “Do try not to get a hard-on while I’m gone, please. I can’t be running back today to rescue you from your own cock.”
Chapter 2
Ismiled from myplace among the stacks when I saw what book the boy held delicately, remembering how I felt the first time I discovered the same story years ago.
“Good choice,” I said, startling him. He jerked backward, dropping the book and pressing himself against the shelf. I chuckled, bending to retrieve it before running my fingers overthe title. “I think my favorite part was when the Potion Master’s robes were set on fire.”
His eyes widened briefly before he returned my smile. I held the book to him, but he made no move to take it, choosing to turn back toward the shelf and glance at the rest of the series. “I liked the Cerberus guarding the trap door.”
“Ah, yes. Fluffy. I liked that part as well.”
He made no move to turn around, still browsing the titles in the young adult section, and I shrugged, turning to the opposite shelf and doing the same.
