Jace talked her through securing the home once more and made her promise to do it each time she left and entered the home.
“Hey,” he said next. “I better run. I’ll be there to pick you up in an hour.”
“Sounds good.” Once she disconnected the line, Amy flopped onto the bedroom floor in a patch of sunlight. The bright warmth had a way of setting her mind right, the way Jace did. It reminded her that no matter how dark the night became, a beautiful sunrise awaited her each morning. She’d hold on to that same hope with this too. This, being the thing she didn’t want to think about right then.
Her mind dug up a different unpleasant thought, though. When Jace had said he was getting paid for the job, Amy’s reaction had split off into opposite directions. The glad reaction made sense; thank heavens he was getting paid for it. The wounded reaction made less sense. It was just that, it pricked at a sensitive part of her. The part linked to old relationships where she’d been used in one way or another. Did Jacewantto spend time with her, or was he just doing his job?
Best-case scenario would be both. But that would make it hard to gauge his feelings for her, wouldn’t it?
But his kiss had helped.
Talk about a hectic morning. She couldn’t even settle on an emotion. The zing of excitement that shot through her body proved that point. One tiny recollection of Jace’s strong and passionate kiss and she was smiling.Stay on that, Amy. Don’t think about the rest.
The rest.
The rest of the time she’d spent with Jace. Listening to details about some sick, cryptic site. One that—had Jace and his team not intervened—she would have fallen victim to? And who’s to say these guys wouldn’t still succeed? She was alone right now, wasn’t she?
Stop, Amy. Just stop.
She headed straight for the spare bedroom and ripped the covers and sheets off the bed. May as well throw them in the wash, vacuum the floors, and get the room ready for Jace. The sooner he moved in, the better.
