His dad continued to surprise him. He’d never realized his father cared that much. “That never would have happened. Alexis wouldn’t have allowed it.”
“As I said, I was foolish.” Thomas coughed. “About two months ago, I found out by chance that Alexis would be the new director at Hope House. I realize you never wanted that position on the board there, but I had hoped and prayed it would help the two of you reconnect, and I could right a wrong.”
“That’s why you made my board position a prerequisite for the donation?” He ran a hand through his hair. He hadn’t seen that coming. Had never dreamed that was the reason.
“I knew you’d be too much of a gentleman to deny the shelter that money. Forgive me if I put you in an awkward place, but I had to try.”
The first smile in an hour surfaced to Trey’s face. “It worked, at least I believe it did. Alexis was at the house when Norris called me. She’s here with me, waiting down the hall.”
His father’s face lit. “Do you think…do you think she’d allow me to speak with her?”
This humble version of his father twisted Trey’s insides. He’d always wanted a fatherlier father, but not like this, not because his dad was dying. “I can ask her.”
“Would you please? I’d like to die knowing I’ve asked her forgiveness for the cruel words I said to her.”
He wanted to argue with his father, and insist he wasn’t dying. Yet, he knew deep in his heart it was true. Denial wouldn’t change the facts. Short of divine intervention, he’d soon lose his father. “I’ll go find her.”
