Her head bobbed slightly as she processed the information. “I had no idea until now.”

“Be mad at me all you want for hurting you, but please don’t be angry that I interfered with Tynley. I only wanted to help, even if it was too little, too late.”

Her eyes widened, and an expressive smile appeared. “How could I be mad? You changed Tynley’s life for the better. The increased wage allowed her to rent an apartment in a safer area of town, CPS released her case, and she met the man she’s going to marry. Thank you.”

“I don’t deserve any thanks. Knowing Tynley and Harper are doing well is all I need.”

She let out a low whoosh. “This is a lot of information to process.”

“I’m sorry,” he said for the umpteenth time that night.

Standing to her feet, she shook her head. “You did what you thought was right at the time. Given age and wisdom, most of us would have chosen differently, but we do the best we can with the knowledge we have at the time.”

“We’d like to think so, at least.” He stood up as well, walked with her to the French doors.

She turned and looked at him before passing through. “I’m going home. There’s a lot to think about.”

“I understand.”

“Thank you for telling me the whole story.” Her fingers touched his face softly. “I’ll see myself out.”

“Have a good night.” He walked quietly beside her through the house, then stood at the door until he saw her drive safely away.
