So, the relationship between him and his father wasn’t great. No surprise there, but at least he semi-acknowledged it now.

Dr. Lia entered the waiting area before the past had a chance to haunt Alexis. If she thought about Trey and his father for long, the old anger, feelings of inferiority would return, and it wasn’t a place she wished to go.

“Mr. Kaplan?”

He stood and shook the doctor’s hand. “Trey is fine. How’s Truffles?”

“She has a fracture in her back leg, but it’s a clean break. I’m going to set it, then cast it, and I’d like to keep her overnight for observation.” Dr. Lia gave him a reassuring smile. “In a few weeks, she’ll be healed completely. All things considered, she’s a lucky girl.”

“May I see her?”

Dr. Lia hesitated. “For a few minutes. Don’t be alarmed by her. The leg’s not looking too pretty right now. She’s also on a heavy dose of pain medicine that has her knocked out. It’s for her own good, but I don’t want you shocked by her.”

“Thanks for the warning.”

“Come on back.” The veterinarian turned and started to walk.

Trey turned to Alexis. “Are you coming?”

The temptation was fierce, but a gut instinct held her back. “You go ahead. I’ll be here waiting.”
