Chapter Four
Sky’s heart sank atthe anger and disappointment on his face. She swallowed back the tears and emotion that twisted her stomach into a big ball of pain. She should be used to it.He was probably hoping for an attractive wife. She’d been called ugly, stupid, and worthless her whole life by her controlling father, enough for her to never doubt it.She turned toward Daniel.
Daniel’s smile sank at the sad look on her face. His hand went to her shoulder.“Hey, everything is going to be okay,” he soothed.
“No, I don’t think it will.I can’t go back home, and I don’t have anywhere else to go...”She held up a hand and drew in a deep breath to steady her fear.“I’m sorry, this is not your problem. Can you take me back to the station, and I’ll get out of his hair for good?”
“What are you talking about? You’re not going anywhere.”
“Daniel, he doesn’t want me here. He’s disappointed. Please take me back.”
Both of his hands landed on her shoulders, so he could get her full attention. He bent, so his gaze was more level with hers.“Now, listen here.He is not disappointed in you. He’s just surprised, and he really hates surprises.”
Sky shook her head as she twisted her hands together in front of her stomach.“No, I saw anger.”
Daniel chuckled.“Oh, yeah, he was angry, but at himself and his reaction to you.”
Sky looked confused.“I don’t understand,” she murmured.
Daniel closed his eyes.Jesus.She was so innocent and sweet.Daniel decided at that moment that if Jared didn’t want her, he would take her, and he’d do his best to make her damn happy.
“Daniel, get your fucking hands off her right now.”
Sky jumped again at the rough barking voice several yards behind her.
Daniel shook his head sadly, then chuckled and released her shoulders. Now he knew for sure. There had been no chance of having this woman.Jared had already become possessive of her.
“Come on, Sky.Let me get you and your suitcase into the house, and I’ll show you to your room.”
Daniel led her in through the massive dark wood front door and up to a wide set of steps. Her eyes took in as much as she could. She couldn’t believe she’d be living in a house as grand as the one she was in, and it already made her nervous. It would take her a while to get used to.
Sky sat on the side of her bed after Daniel had left her and looked around at her surroundings. The walls were a warm cream color. The floors were wood except for the rug in the middle of the room. The long Oriental carpet had splashes of creams, blues, and greys. The bed was large and covered in a deep blue comforter. There was also a dresser, a nightstand, and a chair in the room. She’d never slept in a room this beautiful before, and it overwhelmed her.
She was awe-inspired by the whole house.
Sky took several deep breaths. She was beyond exhausted.Overwhelmed by the bus rides, overwhelmed by the ranch and the huge house, but mostly, she was overwhelmed by the man.He was enormous, well over six feet, and dark.Dark hair, dark skin, and dark eyes that seemed to see right through her.The man who would be her husband was nothing like she’d imagined he’d be.
She pushed herself up, grabbed her bag, and walked into the attached bathroom, which was also decorated in creams, from the towels to the flooring and walls.Sky avoided looking at herself in the large mirror over the sink as she got undressed. She threw her clothes into a pile to be washed before she stepped into the hot spray.
A shiver overtook her body as warmth slowly seeped into her skin. She couldn’t believe how cold she’d been. She guessed it was because she was exhausted since it was very comfortable in the house and the low eighties outside.
She washed her hair and body quickly and turned off the water when her legs started to shake from fatigue. She dried herself, wrapped a towel around her head to help get some of the moisture out of her hair, and slipped on the robe from the hook on the back of the bathroom door.
Sky wiped the condensation off the mirror before pulling the towel from her hair and letting it cascade down her back. She turned her head to the side, then turned it the other way, concentrating on the flaws her father had always seen.
She had big eyes, too big for her face, but they were a light gray color that people had always complimented her on.Her hair was a mousy brown, but it was long and thick, and cascaded down to the middle of her back and tended to curl, especially if it was humid out.Her lips were overly plump and had always reminded her of those fake toy balloon lips. Her nose was turned up a bit more than she’d like, but still, it seemed to fit with her face. Her skin was too pale. She tended to burn instead of tan like most people, so she spent little time in the sun.
Her hands slid down her body before opening the robe and studying her body. Her breasts were on the large side, and it was something she always disliked about herself. Her waist dipped in before flowing into full hips and fat thighs. She knew people thought she was thin, but if they looked at her naked, they would definitely change their minds.Clothes hid a lot of flaws.
