“They were both part of Malorie Thorne’s security team.”

As we predicted, it was Grace’s own mother who sent the shooters after her.

“What else do we know about Malorie Thorne?” I ask.

“I’m making a PDF file as we speak,” Enzo says. “The woman has a finger in every pie. That includes human trafficking. I’m still figuring out what her role is in the organization, but she seems to have a high ranking.”

I think about the medallion I was given at the art auction.

It depicted two fire-breathing dragons facing each other. It’s the secret organization’s insignia. Many anonymous families have joined forces to create the largest criminal racket in history.

They’re raking in billions of dollars by selling women and children.

I watch Grace as I listen to Enzo speak.

Something about this girl awakens every protective instinct in me. I know that I won't be able to rest until I destroy everything and everyone who seeks to harm her.

“Maybe the girl knows something that could be of value,” Enzo says. “You should try talking to her.”

"I don't think she's ready to open up yet, but I'll see what I can do," I say.

"Did you give her the ring yet?" Enzo asks.

"Yes."

"How did she take it?"

"She threw it into the ocean," I say.

Enzo is quiet for a moment. "She threw a seven-carat diamond ring into the ocean?"

"Yes."

"Sounds like you've finally met your match." Enzo chuckles. "You'll have your hands full with this one."

"I need you to fetch the ring for me."

"I beg your pardon?"

"You heard me," I say.

"You can't be serious right now," Enzo scoffs. "You want me to find a ring in the fucking ocean?"

"If anyone can find it, it's you," I state. "It's a seven-carat diamond. You know how I feel about these things."

I had another life before this. One where my father clipped coupons from newspapers just so all of us would have enough to eat. One where I saw him working three jobs so he could send us to college one day.

My pockets are deep now, but I’ll never forget where I came from. I know the value of money more than most people in my world.

Enzo sighs. "One of these days, you're going to realize that you take me for granted, Dante."

"So you'll do it?" I ask.

"It's not like I have a choice," he mumbles.

"I knew I could count on you."

"Save the praise forafterI find the damn ring."
