"I'm not sure," he says. "I have no idea if she feels the same way I do."
"Veronica says we're supposed to be brave when it comes to love."
"The princess is likely correct."
"She has a habit of that at the moment," I murmur, thinking about her asking me whether or not I was in love with Nate, something that's currently breaking my heart.
"Mmm." He takes a deep breath. "Is there anything else you want to know about Camille?"
Right. That's what we're supposed to be talking about, not feelings of love. "What's her favourite thing to bake?"
"Canelé," he responds without even thinking about it. "I can get her to show you at some point now she's here. I've tried to make them myself, but I'm nowhere near as good."
"Oh, erm, yes, that would be nice." I don't even know if I'm lying. I love learning how to bake new things, but the idea of having to face Camille with what I now know about Nate's relationship with her is almost too much to bear.
Now I really need to talk to Veronica, because there's no way I can make sense of this on my own.
Chapter 13
Veronica's lady's maid opens the door almost immediately after I've knocked and dips into a curtsy. "Your Highness."
"Is my sister in?" I ask.
"Her Highness is in her bed chamber."
"Is she still awake?"
"I believe so," she responds. "I can check for you, if you wish."
I shake my head. "I can do it myself." I enter the room which is laid out exactly like mine but decorated as per Veronica's style choices.
I knock once before pushing open the door to Veronica's bed chamber.
She looks up from the book she's reading and raises an eyebrow. "You know you're supposed to check before you come into someone's bedroom? What if I hadn't been alone?"
"Then your lady's maid would have said that you had company," I point out.
"I should have her tell people that anyway," she mutters.
"I'm having feelings I don't understand, and I need your help," I announce, ignoring her statement.
She raises an eyebrow, but shuts her book and sets it to the side. "What kind of feelings? I take it you didn't tell Nate you love him yet."
I sigh. "No. And I'm not going to."
"Seriously, Evie? You can't just keep something like that to yourself when the two of you are spending basically every night together."
"I have to, and I will."
She frowns and comes over to sit down beside me. "What happened?"
"He used to sleep with Camille." And he's in love with someone else, but I'm not sure I'm strong enough to say that outloud. It will make it true.
"Enlighten me?"
"Chef Asselin. She's his sous chef, they studied together in Gaullesse."
"How did she end up here?" Veronica asks.
