Deadshot was more worried about making sure that Sarah was all right. Throwing open the back flaps, he looked inside and felt relief wash over him when he saw that Sarah was really there.
“It’s over,” he said, holding out his hand. Sarah placed hers in his and allowed him to help her out of the wagon.
“Sarah!” the kid yelled, running past Deadshot and embracing his sister.
A moment later, Isabelle threw her arms around both of them. He took a step back as a smile formed on his face. They were finally back together the way they were always supposed to be.
Epilogue
Deadshot headed back into the house, following the smell of freshly baked bread and coffee. It had been two years, and he was still trying to get used to being taken care of. Stepping into the kitchen, he simply stopped for a moment and watched in amazement as Isabelle turned and smiled at him.
“You hungry?” she asked, taking off her apron.
“Always,” he replied. “Unless Rider’s cooking.”
They both laughed at that, and as if on cue, Rider and Harrison came walking into the kitchen. At the sight of Deadshot, Harrison immediately let go of Rider’s hand and ran toward Deadshot. “Dada!” he called excitedly.
Deadshot bent down and scooped his son up into his arms. Harrison’s first words wereDada, and it made Deadshot prouder than he had ever felt before. He had never imagined that he would ever have a son, and now he had two. Sure, they weren’t his biological children, but that didn’t matter at all. Rider was everything Deadshot could have ever wanted in a son.The kid had really grown up in the last two years and was almost as tall as Deadshot.
He still reminded Deadshot so much of himself when he was younger. If anybody saw them together and didn’t know better, they would think that Deadshot was his real father. Things were different with Harrison. Deadshot got to raise him from the day he was born, and he even got to choose his name. Being able to honor his brother by passing his name on to his son was unbelievably healing for him.
Deadshot spun Harrison around, causing him to laugh excitedly.
“Are we still going to train this afternoon?” Rider asked, sitting down at the table.
“Of course,” Deadshot agreed. “Wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
Deadshot had been training with Rider almost every day since he and Isabelle got married and he moved into the ranch house with them. It had all happened so suddenly, and it had been a huge adjustment, but it was the best thing that had ever happened to Deadshot.
After the shootout with Quincy, Deadshot headed home, and Isabelle had returned to the ranch with her kids. It didn’t feel right, and as luck would have it, Rider showed up on his doorstep a couple of days later. Things quickly changed after that, and before Deadshot knew it, he had moved to the ranch, fallen madly in love with Isabelle, and agreed to adopt Sarah’s baby.
Sarah didn’t feel ready to be a mother and wasn’t sure whether she could give the child the life and love it deserved, but she also didn’t want to abandon it. It was Isabelle’s idea to adopt the baby and raise it as her own. Deadshot, surprising himself, had offered to do it with her, and that was how he had become the father of two amazing boys in a matter of weeks.
Rider took on a lot of responsibility when it came to running the ranch, but he wanted to be like Deadshot. Before the raid, he had been planning to follow in his father’s footsteps and take over running the ranch when his father retired, but their mission to rescue Isabelle and Sarah had changed something in the kid. Not long after they returned home, the kid had told Deadshot that he wanted to become a bounty hunter.
Hearing those words had made Deadshot extremely proud but also really worried. Being a bounty hunter was a dangerous job, and Deadshot was concerned about how Isabelle would react. Surprisingly, she didn’t take it as badly as he had thought. Sure, she wasn’t happy with the idea, but after Rider promised that he would return home often, she warmed up to it.
“Looks like we are just in time,” Sarah said as she led Alex into the kitchen through the back door.
“The food smells amazing,” Alex complimented Isabelle, who couldn’t stop smiling.
Deadshot sat down next to Rider, with Harrison on his lap, and Alex took the seat next to him.
“I finished repairing the fence,” Alex told him. “Should be safe for the calves now.”
Deadshot nodded. “We’ll move them after dinner.”
Isabelle and Sarah started setting the table, and soon enough, they were all eating and laughing.
When Deadshot had moved to the ranch and married Isabelle, he had also taken over running the ranch. It took a lot of work to learn everything, but they did it as a family. They also had to hire some new workers, and Alex was one of them. After giving birth to Harrison, Sarah was a mess, and they were all worried about her, but Alex had awakened something in her, and the more time she spent with him, the happier she became.
Alex had met Sarah while she was still with child and knew everything that had happened. Sarah had fallen for him but was scared that he wouldn’t be interested in her after what Quincy had done to her and after having a baby. Alex soon proved that none of those things mattered to him. He stood by Sarah until she was ready to be in a relationship. They were all incredibly grateful that he was being so good to her. The two of them were set to get married in a couple of months, and Deadshot was really happy for them. Alex was a good man, and Sarah deserved to be happy.
“How’s the house coming along?” Isabelle asked, focusing her beautiful green eyes on Deadshot. “Will it be ready in time?”
“Definitely,” Deadshot replied. “In fact, I think we’ll be done ahead of schedule.”
“We should all go take a look,” Sarah suggested. “I was thinking of making a few changes and was hoping to talk to you about it.”
