He shrugs. “Still, half a shifter.”

“But why couldn’t my former pack members smell me?” I ask.

“Youwerein a wolf pack, were you?”

I nod.

“I am a lycan,” he says. “Maybe it makes a difference for us.”

Now that makes sense and explains why Daniel-

Wait, what?

“You are a lycan?!”

“Yes.”

“Why are you mated to a hybrid?” I gape. “Shouldn’t your mate be a fellow lycan, or at least a super-strong wolf?”

“Why shouldn’t I be mated to you?” he blinks. “As far as I can tell, you are pretty amazing.”

“I am not amazing.” I shake my head. “I am a hybrid, barely a real wolf, and I work in this shady club.”

“So, what? I am currently a visitor in this shady club. That makes me even shadier!”

His logic makes my mouth drop open again.

“Besides, being a hybrid is so fascinating! One of my brothers is mated to a hybrid, too, although she is half siren. Oh, and one of my best friends is a hybrid as well. Half vampire.”

“But that’s different,” I argue. “Obviously, sirens and vampires are still some sort of shifters.”

“What’s bad about being half human?” he asks.

“Nothing, I don’t mind it,” I admit.

“See?” He smiles like he just had a gotcha moment. “Why should I mind it then?”

I am not sure if it works that way, but at the same time, I don’t have any arguments to prove him otherwise. A gentle knock against the window startles me.

“Oh!” Felix smiles. “That must be my brother. He said he would check on us in case I don’t link him back.” He looks flustered. “I was so engulfed in our talk that I forgot to reach out to him.”

“Say, this reminds me… where is the bouncer?” I ask.

“Oh, I might have bribed him to leave us alone,” Felix admits. “I know this sounds creepy now. Does it?” he groans. “Goddess, I just realized I am coming off like such a creep! But I swear this is the first time I have been in such a club. I just wanted to have a chance to talk to you, without following you around, like a creepy stalker would.”

His panic makes me chuckle. “You are not creepy at all,” I reassure him.

He smiles in relief, just to startle when there is a more insistent knock against the window. We are on the second floor, but I guess his brother climbed up the emergency staircase. Felix opens the window, and I can see a tall, dark-haired guy. He looks to be Felix’s age. “Sorry, Dario! We are fine.”

“Goddess,” Dario sighs. “You had me worried.”

Felix hasn’t let go of my hand and now tugs me closer. “Meet Gwen! She is my mate.”

Dario smiles at me. It’s a gentle, warm smile that makes my anxiety lessen even more. If he hated me or didn’t think I was worthy of being his brother’s mate, he wouldn’t smile like that. “I am Dario,” he says. “Felix’s twin brother.”

His words make my eyes widen. “You are twins?”

“Oh, right, I forgot to tell you.” Felix slaps his forehead. “Yes, we are twins. Fraternal twins, obviously. The youngest of our family,” he grins. “Though I am older than Dario.”
