Covering us, I pulled out.
“Yeah,” Halley answered, grabbing the sheet and covering herself up. She left me the blanket to wrap around myself as not to expose my bloody junk.
“Get dressed. We have some questions.”
They let Halley go to the bathroom to clean up and dress, but the man kept his gun trained on me. Smart.Completely naked, except for my hat, even without my leather or weapons, I could have taken both of them.
As he made sure to keep his gun out of my reach, he had a billion questions. I answered none of them. “Do you all have a warrant?”
“We don’t need one since you’re wanted in California.”
“Wrong guy, dipshit. That’s Snakebite.”
“What’s your nickname? Turd?”
While I wanted to punch the suits’ teeth in, the lady fed was taking a dressed Halley out the door. “Hey, where are you going?”
“Halley’s going downtown to be questioned. You should get dressed while we’re gone. We will have questions for you soon,” she said.
Halley’s eyes pleaded with me as the woman took her out the door. She was scared and confused. I’d have tackled them now if the man didn’t keep his weapon on me as he backed out the door.
Halley returned the next morning, looking refreshed. I hadn’t gotten a lick of sleep.
“Last night was crazy, the way they took me out of here. But they explained they didn’t know if I was in danger because of all the biker gang business. With women being treated like property and all. I told them you were good to me, and finding no property tattoos or bruises on me, I think they believed it.”
She yawned and stretched.
“I don’t care what they think.”
“Anyway, it was so late when they finished questioning, they let me sleep over at the station, on the couch, not in a cell.”
“What did you tell them?”
“I answered all their questions. And they scheduled me a psych evaluation, but they said that was standard procedure. Cowboy, I think they’re going to help. Also, they’ll be back around lunch time to interview you and Snakebite.”
“You told them about Snakebite.”
“I told them everything. And they agree with me that it sounds like Snakebite’s behind it.”
“Halley, they’ll say anything to get answers from you.”
She wasn’t listening. “Did you know Snakebite is wanted for murder?”
“You saw him murder the General.”
“Yeah, but that was revenge. That I can understand. Even self-defense, I get it, but he’s accused of killing someone randomly, a bystander. I never thought he had that in him.”
Her words struck me. I may have not been wanted, but I’d killed too many people to count, a few bystanders, too.
“God, I’m an idiot. I didn’t think Snakebite would have it in him. Until now, I didn’t think he’d harm my baby, but now, I’m not too sure.”
Fuck—now killing bystanders meant a danger to the baby. I changed the subject. “What else did they ask?”
“They asked if I had any enemies, anyone who wanted to harm the baby. I told them no. I didn’t tell them what you suspect about Anarchy.”
“Why not?”
“I figure it’s your story to tell.”
