Freya's expression hardened. "Jasper said that?"

"He sounded... sincere. Like he genuinely believed it. Like he was just a concerned citizen sharing reasonable concerns." Chloe's voice cracked. "And I thought, maybe he's right. Maybe everyone would be better off if I just disappeared."

"Chloe." Freya leaned forward, her voice firm. "Listen to me carefully. You are not the cause of this. The contamination started at that well, long before you ever set foot in Hollow Oak. Corin's records prove it. Moira's research proves it. The only thing you're guilty of is being an easy target."

"But my druid blood..."

"Your druid blood makes you sensitive to the land. It doesn't make you a poison." Freya reached out and took her hands. "Whoever is doing this wants you gone. They've been spreading whispers, building suspicion, making you feel isolated and afraid. And if you leave, they win."

"They win," Diana echoed from the doorway. "They get exactly what they want. You're gone, your reputation is destroyed, and no one ever finds out who really broke that seal."

Chloe looked between them. "You think someone's deliberately trying to drive me out?"

"I think someone broke an ancient seal, poisoned the land, killed Corin's bees, and has been very carefully making sure allthe blame falls on you." Freya's green eyes blazed. "And I think if you run, you're giving them permission to do it again to the next person who doesn't fit their idea of who belongs in Hollow Oak."

The words hit hard. Chloe thought about all the places she'd left before, all the times she'd walked away rather than fight. Had she been running from real danger, or had she been giving up too easily? Had there been other people like her, people who came after, who faced the same whispers and suspicions?

"The truth always comes out," Diana said quietly. "It might take time, but it does. And when it comes out here, when everyone realizes what's really been happening, you want to be here to see it. You want to be part of rebuilding what was broken."

"And what about Corin?" Chloe's voice was barely a whisper. "He's already put himself on the line for me. If I stay and things get worse..."

"He's a big boy. He can make his own choices." Freya squeezed her hands. "And from what I've seen, he's already made them. That bear isn't going anywhere, Chloe. Not unless you tell him to. And even then, I'm not sure he'd listen."

Despite everything, Chloe felt her mouth twitch. "He is stubborn."

"He's a Vane. It's in the blood." Freya sat back, her expression softening. "What did Corin teach you, these past few weeks? What did being with him show you?"

Chloe thought about it. The way he'd defended her at the Mercantile, calm and certain. The way he'd walked her home, guarded her cottage, torn apart a well with his bare claws because the thought of her being hurt made him lose control. The way he'd given her space when she asked for it, even though she could see how much it cost him.

"That I don't have to do everything alone," she said slowly. "That asking for help isn't weakness. That standing my ground doesn't mean I have to stand there by myself."

"Then don't." Freya's voice was gentle but firm. "Don't run. Don't let whoever's doing this chase you away from the life you're building. Stay. Fight. Let us help you."

"And if we can't figure out who's behind it?"

"Then we keep trying until we do." Diana moved to sit on the arm of Chloe's chair, her hand warm on her shoulder. "You're not alone in this, Chloe. You never were."

Chloe sat with that for a long moment. The fire crackled, casting dancing shadows across the walls. Outside, the winter wind rattled the windows, but inside, she was surrounded by warmth.

She thought about Jasper's words. If she really cared about this town, she'd leave.

And she thought about Corin's.You belong here, whether you believe it or not.

Two versions of the same question. Two different answers.

She'd spent her whole life choosing to leave. Choosing the path that felt safer, easier, less likely to end in pain. And where had it gotten her? Alone. Rootless. Always starting over, never staying long enough to see anything through.

Not this time.

"I'm not leaving," she said.

Freya smiled. "Good."

"I'm going to discover who's doing this. And when I do, they're going to answer for every whisper, every accusation, every dead plant and poisoned hive."

"Now you sound like Corin."

"Maybe that's not a bad thing." Chloe set down her mug and stood, something new kindling in her chest. Determination.Anger. Hope. "I've spent too long letting other people decide where I belong. That stops now."
