The sliding door sounded again, stopping her from continuing. Angus reentered. His expression was like Aaran’s had been, and I knew something had happened. I didn’t see his brothers come back in with him and wondered where they were.

Angus sat back down next to me before speaking. “My brothers had to leave. With you better, the king has ordered their return,” he said, looking seriously at me.

I knew there was more to…I paused mid-thought.Angus doesn’t live here. Am I going to have to move? My family is here. Where does he live? Will he leave?I felt myself panic. As if reading my thoughts, Angus scooted closer.

“Angel, it’s okay. We’ll figure things out,” he said softly.

“Where do you live?” I blurted. If he lived in Scotland, I didn’t know if I could move that far away.

“I live in Colorado. We’re a little over an hour away if we fly and a few hours away if we drive. But like I said, we can figure it out. I’m not leaving you, Angel.” He grasped my hand, and I felt the truth in his words.

“Thank you. I know it’s hard that I’m so scared—”

“It’s okay. I promised we’d take things slow, and that’s what we’ll do,” Angus said, cutting me off.

A knock at the front door interrupted any other conversation. James got up to answer.

“Alpha.” I heard Beta Brian’s deep voice and tensed. I remembered James had ordered Jackson and Brian to bring in Tom.

“Don’t worry, love; no one will harm you. I won’t let them,” Angus said.

“What do you mean you can’t find him?” James’s voice rose.

Angus stood from his seat and looked at my father. They must have had some sort of silent conversation because my father simply nodded.

“I’ll be right back, Angel,” Angus said.

“Okay,” I replied weakly.

Why couldn’t this be over? Why did Tom have to be a psychotic dick? I deserved happiness as much as the next person.

That thought stopped me. It was true. I realized that now. Ididdeserve happiness. I needed to stop letting my fears rule me. If I wanted happiness, I needed to go after it. It felt like a light bulb had gone on in my head and a heavy weight had lifted. I smiled. I could have a life of happiness.

I could have Angus.

Hearts Entwined

Angus

Iwas livid. James and his men needed to find the man who hurt my mate, or I was going to take matters into my own hands. My dragon agreed. No one hurt our angel and got away with it. I entered the foyer and saw Jackson and another man standing in front of James.

Jackson was an imposing sight. He was a large black man with impressive muscles and bulk. He was the head enforcer for the pack and was one of my king’s good friends. The other man stood about six-one and also had a large frame. He had a bald head, robust features, and a black goatee. His arms sported tattoos, and he wore a leather vest. He looked like a big biker.

Jackson tilted his head in acknowledgment of me. The other man’s eyes widened slightly at my presence, but he continued to speak with James.

“Alpha, when we went to collect Tom, no one was there. His scent was faint and days old. Then we went to find Rick and Chad. Rick was also missing, and Chad claims he has spent no time with them or even spoken to them since the restitution meeting.”

“And you believe him?” I cut in. I knew James was the Alpha and in charge, but this was my mate.

The man narrowed his eyes at my interruption, apparently taking offense at my interruption.Well, fuck you, buddy, I thought. I’d kick his ass.

Luckily, James stepped in, feeling the tension. “Angus, this is my beta, Brian Ness. Brian, this is Angus MacNair, Dragon Guardian, and Embry’s mate,” James said.

“His mate?” Jackson and Brian said at the same time.

“Yes, Embry is my mate, and my question still stands. Do you believe this Chad?” I asked, undeterred.

Brian faced me and swallowed slightly. “I do. He didn’t smell deceitful. Chad would be a good guy if not for Tom and Rick’s influence. He’s a little quiet and has always wanted to fit in.”
