Ten seconds later, Gil’s voice came through the speaker. “I’m not sure who got me stuck here another night, but it was not cool.”

“Hush and let Luke fill us in on what happened last night, or I won’t go with your sister to get your suit.” Tessa’s threat meant nothing to Luke, but it must have meant something to Gil because he hushed.

Luke started with the phone call from his CI. Then the deadbody. David Lee. The attack on Janice Estes. And the connection between Janice and Thad.

“We’re going to owe those Carrington guys a steak dinner when this is all over.” Zane rubbed a hand over his face.

“What do we do now?” Gil’s question wasn’t rhetorical, but no one had an answer.

Zane gave Luke a very pointed look.

“I’ll call Faith and ask her if there’s anything specific she wants us to do. And I’ll check in with Sabrina. I left her a message last night, but it was late. I’m not sure if she’s working on it today. It is Sunday.”

Tessa and Zane looked as confused by that as Luke felt. Could it have been only a week ago that they were at the Baker twins’ party? That Jared and Michael were alive, and no one had been shot? How could so much have gone so wrong so fast?

Zane leaned toward the phone. “Gil, you sure you’re up for the flight? Do the doctors know you’re getting on a plane?”

“They do, thanks to my big-mouth sister. There’s a good doc here. Marine. He gets it. He gave his permission.”

“With caveats,” Tessa interjected.

“Has my sister been talking to you?” Gil’s outrage was tempered with amusement.

“Someone has to make sure the guys in this office don’t die, and the way I see it, the women are the only ones left standing. I’ve talked to your sister”—Tessa turned to Luke—“and I’ve talked to Faith.”

“Today?” his voice cracked on the word and Zane chortled.

“What did I miss?” Gil asked.

“Luke’s an idiot.” Zane answered before Luke had a chance to defend himself.

“What’s new?”

“This time he was an idiot to Faith.” Tessa didn’t glare at him, but it was close. She was definitely on Faith’s side here.

“When did you—” Luke started.

“What did you do?” Gil spoke over him. “You kissed her, didn’t you? Did it go badly?”

“Can we not do this? I need to get some work done, Gil needs to get out of the hospital, and we all need to go to the airport.”

“That’s fine.” Even through the phone, Luke could tell that Gil was up to something. “Tessa, you can fill me in on the plane. See y’all in a few.”

Before Luke could respond, Gil had disconnected the call. Zane stood and clapped his hands. “Sounds like a plan.” Then, “Oh no.”

“What’s wrong, man?”

Zane looked like a lost puppy. “I don’t have a suit.”

Tessa stood, patted his arm, and walked toward her room. “Already taken care of.”

“What?”

“How?”

She looked at the two of them. “I talked to Jacob earlier this week. Then I talked to that tailor you take everything to. The suit was ready yesterday. Jacob has it. He’ll bring it to the airport.” Tessa sounded both smug and defensive, and she didn’t hang around for questions. She slipped into her room, closed the adjoining door, and locked it.

Luke turned on Zane. “What didyoudo?”
