“And how is this victim associated with David Lee?”

“Hope’s client says they ate dinner together several times while Park Mi Cha was there.”

“Anything else I need to know before we go in there?”

“Yes. Hope says this woman is an angel, and if we play good cop/bad cop, she will never speak to either of us again.”

Luke’s shoulders fell, and his entire body relaxed as he awarded her one of his truest smiles. “Your sister is both hilarious and terrifying. I’ll behave.”

“Thank you.”

They sat there, smiling at each other, and the atmosphere in the car sparked with something she couldn’t explain.

A bolt of lightning split the air, and the car shook with the force of the thunder that accompanied it. Before she knew what was happening, Luke had shoved her head down and draped his body over hers. She could feel his breathing coming in gasps. “Luke?”

He jerked upright and helped her lean back. “Sorry. My body reacted to the sound before my brain caught up to what it was.” He reached for her face and turned it toward him with the lightest pressure. “Are you okay? I didn’t slam your head into the gear shift, did I?”

“No damage done.” Except maybe to her traitorous heart. Could he tell how much his touch on her face was messing with her?

“Except to my pride.” Luke dropped his hand and his head. “Stupid overreaction.”

Now it was her turn. She reached for his hand and squeezed. “It wasn’t stupid. You’re being targeted by an unknown assailant. And it did sound like gunfire.”

He wasn’t buying it. She could see red streaks tracing up his neck and into his cheeks.

“Luke?”

“Hmm?”

“Thank you.”

“For what? Saving you from a thunderstorm?”

“For being willing to save me from whatever it was.” Now she’d done it. He was staring her full in the face, and she couldn’t back down from what she’d said or the way she’d said it. Might as well go all in. “I’m not used to men who want to protect me or are willing to sacrifice themselves for me.”

Luke shook his head in obvious frustration. “You weren’t in danger.”

“But you didn’t know that.”

He gave her a weak smile. “Well, you know how it is. Hope would kill me if you got killed in the parking lot of her office.”

She squeezed his hand. “Nice try.” She leaned toward him and planted one soft, lingering kiss on his cheek.

She pulled away, and the light stubble on his chin left her lipstingling. She could feel his breath on her face and see a vein throbbing in his neck.

“Faith.” Her name was a soft moan, and the longing in it sent a wave of desire through her. One she was unprepared to resist. She did the only reasonable thing she could do.

She pressed her lips to his.

LUKE’S BRAIN COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN.He wasn’t thinking about the FBI or being a target of a disturbingly determined killer.

There was only Faith.

He cradled her face in his hands and kissed her, not so much like it was their first kiss, but like it might be their last.

The storm raged around them, but in the privacy afforded by the rain, they were alone.
