“Look, David, if you don’t want to meet him right now, I’ll tell him to come back tomorrow.”
“No, no, I better get this over with, otherwise I won’t sleep all night.”
Morgan paused, scenting David’s anxiety, then said, “I’m going to get Zane but will stay with you until you want me to leave. How does that sound?”
David smiled, “Yeah, that sounds good.”
Morgan got up, put the chair back against the wall, and said, “Okay, I’ll be right back.” Giving David a big grin before leaving, he said, “Now, don’t disappear on me.”

Jackson ended the call with his brother, leaned back in his chair, swiveled and stared at the forest through his window.Another brother finds his mate but this one can disappear. How extraordinary! I wonder how he got this rare ability and what it means for my pack. Why would the Fates bring him here and what the fuck will Zane’s gift be? It seems my mate was right to plan for more enforcers. Shit, I’m going to have a small army soon.Hearing a knock, he turned back around and said, “Come in.”
Carson entered. “You wanted to see me, bro?”
“Have a seat. I have something to talk over with you.”
“Nothing bad, hopefully.”
“Nope. First of all, Zane found the proof we were in Vegas when the massacre took place.”
“That’s fantastic! So, when will our uncle’s complaint against us be dismissed?”
“Not right away. I decided to sit on the proof while our complaint goes forward, but Penn has the evidence and if he needs to, it’ll be submitted.”
“But why? Our names are under a cloud until then.”
“I agree. But let me ask you this…what do you think our uncle will do if we give the High Council our evidence?”
Carson thought about his uncle and all the devious shit he had done so far. “He’d figure out some other way to attack us.”
“Correct. So, do you see any benefit to us…except clearing our names…right now if we disclosed the evidence?”
Carson thought for a moment before answering, “Not really, our dear uncle wouldn’t let it drop. He almost got Colton killed in Mexico and when that failed, he tried provoking us to attack…and I nearly fell into his trap.”
“Carson, sometimes being Alpha means I have to make choices as to which is the lesser of two evils. Of course, I’d prefer our names cleared of his heinous accusations, but hopefully, by keeping our uncle in the dark, all of us will be safer including the pups and the pups yet to be born. And that’s my primary job as the Alpha of this pack.”
“Yeah, I get it. There’s lots of things our father told me about being an Alpha that were bullshit. I’m just figuring that out now.”
“But youarefiguring it out, and that’s the most important thing of all. I’m proud of you, bro.”
“I appreciate it, but I still have a long way to go, you know.”
“That…what you just said…that shows me more than anything how far you’ve come,” Jackson smiled. “Next thing. Do you remember our cousins? The ones on our mother’s side?”
“Uhmm, faintly. I know they moved away but have no idea where or when; it had to be when I was very young. Also, I never really knew them very well because they were either older than me or younger, so Cody and Colton and I usually played together.”
“They left when I was five,” said Jackson, “so you’d have been three, and like you, Cody only has faint memories of them.”
“Where did they go?”
“Our cousins moved back east when their grandfather was dying so their father could become the Alpha of the Rolling Hill Pack.”
“Why are you asking me about them, now?”
“I received an email from them asking permission to visit and I had Dylon check them out. Everything seems on the up-and-up. I’m going to grant their request, but only for a brief visit. My main concern is Dakota.”
“Why Dakota?”
