You don’t, but you’re about to.
‘I’ll call you back once I’ve spoken to him.’
‘Great,’ Lucas says before hanging up.
Chapter Thirty-Eight
RONAN
Traffic is heavy on the way back from St. Jude’s. It takes me the best part of an hour to get home to Savannah. I consider stopping at the bakery to pick up her favourite breakfast pastries, or stopping at the florists to pick up flowers, but flowers always seem to say, ‘I’m sorry,’ and I’m not sorry.
I’m not sorry we came out as a couple.
I’m not sorry that we no longer have to sneak around.
And I’m not sorry that I get to take the girls to school.
The public is so wrong about us. It’s going to give me enormous pleasure proving every single one of those negative comments wrong. Sooner rather than later. Which is why I’m planning on paying a visit to her fathers, sooner rather than later.
I pull up outside Savannah’s house and let myself in. She’s barefoot, pacing the kitchen in one of my t-shirts. She clutches a pink sparkly notebook in one hand and a fluffy pink pen in the other.
‘You look like you’re ready to take on the world.’ I nod towards the notebook as I stride across the open-plan space and close the distance between us, encircling her in my arms.
‘You have no idea. I spoke to Lucas.’ She tilts her head back to look up at me. ‘He made a suggestion.’
I bet he did.
I make us both a coffee while she fills me in.
‘So, basically they want us to go on camera and explain how our relationship developed?’
‘Yes. What do you think? Will you do it?’ Earnest eyes, tinged with both hope and vulnerability, bore into mine.
‘Of course I’ll do it. I’ll do anything for you, Savannah.’ I’ve been dying for the world to know she’s mine, and now I get to be the one who tells them. It’s a win- win.
Her chest sinks with a substantial sigh of relief. ‘I know you hate the camera.’
‘I do, but I’d do it for you. I was coming to the shoot, anyway. And putting my hands on you and telling the world I’m obsessed with you is no hardship. Trust me.’ I slip a hand under her t-shirt. My t-shirt. It’s the same thing.
She swats it away. ‘Later, Ro! I have a million things I need to do right now and sadly, you aren’t one of them.’
‘I’m just glad to see you feeling more like yourself. I hate seeing you cry, Sav. Especially over a bunch of strangers’ opinions.’ I drain my coffee and stick the cup in the dishwasher.
‘I’ve changed my blog handle to Sassy Sav, as chosen by you,’ she announces, with a wobbly smile. ‘It’s all part of the rebrand.’ She taps her notebook with the pen. ‘I’ll still offer parenting advice, but I’m going to start documenting my dating life. Sassy Sav’s Guide to Dating After Kids, if that’s okay with you…’ She trails off.
‘I absolutely love it, baby.’ I grab her waist and pull her flush against me. ‘I’m so fucking proud of you. You’ve always been Sassy Sav to me.’
‘Right, let’s call Lucas.’ She grabs her phone from the table.
Lucas’s polished voice answers on the first ring. ‘Savannah.’
‘We’ll do it,’ she says.
‘Great news. It’s the right decision if you two want to be taken seriously.’
‘And you’re basically getting two ambassadors for the price of one.’ Savannah shrugs.
‘Oh no, I signed the male ambassador this morning. He flew in yesterday. You’ll meet him at the shoot,’ Lucas says with a slight superiority.
