‘You know what I want, Savannah.’ My eyes bore into hers. ‘I want to fuck you. And it seems the universe is conspiring to help me.’

She stalks towards the house, but not before I catch the smirk stretching her lips. ‘That filthy mouth will get you in trouble one of these days,’ she calls over her shoulder, her ass swaying sultrily.

‘Here’s hoping.’ Another idea springs to mind. I’m full of them tonight.

‘You know we’re going down on a clean-up mission,’ she calls from the doorway.

‘Sweetheart, I’ll go down for you on any mission.’ Savannah Kingsley brings out the filthiest thoughts in me. I can’t help it.

She shakes her head in exasperation, but I don’t miss the pink tinge to her cheeks.

‘I’ll be back for you shortly. I just need to pick up a few things.’ And make a phone call, because there’s no way I’m going to waste the entire night on a clean-up mission. Not when I can call in reinforcements.

She nods, gripping the door frame like she’s holding on for dear life.

We might have a job to do, but we also have the rest of the night together and presumably, we’ll be sleeping under the same roof. A roof far, far, far away from here and the prying eyes of the paps and her children. I, for one, plan to make the most of that opportunity.

I head to the nearest convenience store and pull up my best friend’s phone number on the handsfree system. Jake answers on the second ring.

‘Well, if it isn’t Dublin’s biggest Don Juan. What are you doing calling on a Saturday night? I thought you’d be on the prowl with your brother.’ Jake’s voice echoes like he’s somewhere spacious, but given the size of his house, he’s probably at home.

‘Funny. Very funny. We aren’t all lucky enough to be smug and happily married like you,’ I tease, but even as the words leave my mouth, I catch the envy in them.

Marriage is not something I’ve given much consideration to before, but honestly, it’s not something I’d shy away from if the circumstances were right.

I haven’t even admitted to Savannah that I want to date her for fear of scaring her off, let alone entertained the M word. Maybe it’s time to change all that. Maybe instead of treading carefully and not scaring her off, I should be paving the path for both of us, beating back any obstacles that might stand in our way.

‘So, how’s things?’ Jake interrupts my thoughts.

‘Good.’ What else can I say? I’m obsessed with a woman who’s more unavailable than a nun, but I’m working on wearing her down. ‘How are you?’

‘Great thanks, just chilling here on the couch with Jess. Is everything okay?’

‘Everything is fine, but I need your help,’ I admit.

‘Course you do,’ he sniggers. ‘Let me guess… girl trouble?’

‘No. Plumbing trouble.’

‘Oh shit. Is there something up with your junk? All jokes aside, you should be careful if you’re having casual sex.’ Genuine concern weighs on my friend’s warning.

‘Not my junk! Actual plumbing trouble. I have a friend who owns a house in Ballybowen. There’s been a leak. We’re on our way to fix it right now, but I wondered if you’d be free to help. I know how much you love the water,’ I tease. ‘And many hands make light work.’

‘For fuck’s sake, you want me to leave my comfortable sofa and my stunning wife for a clean-up mission?’ he grumbles, but I can tell he’s already on the move.

Jake’s one of those guys I could call on at any time of the night or day for anything, and if he can help, he will. That’s why he’s my best friend. I only hope I get to return the favour one day.

‘Yep…’ I thrum my fingers on the steering wheel as I negotiate the car into the only space outside the store. ‘Bring your wife. She’s not afraid of getting wet either.’

‘Careful,’ Jake warns, but his chuckle assures me he appreciates my joke. ‘There better be at least beer and pizza involved.’

‘Of course.’ I slide out of the car and enter the store, grabbing a trolley. I’m going to need it for all this beer and pizza, apparently. ‘And thank you. I’ll text you the address. We’re on our way. The key is under the mat at the front door if you get there first.’

‘Huh, you’ll probably arrive when all the work is done,’ he huffs.

‘I’ll get there as fast as I can.’

‘Who is this friend? Do I know him?’ Jake adds, like it’s an afterthought.
