That wasn’t entirely true. What if Paul wanted to finish what Pamela started? What if they were in it together?
“Paul?”
“He was at a training seminar when the police called him. John’s contact said they brought him in for questioning. He didn’t know what Pamela was doing.”
“Threat?” Talking in one or two words fucking sucked, but luckily Nathan understood what I needed to know.
“Probably not. But he won’t be allowed within fifty feet of Madi.”
“Restrain—”
He saved me from having to finish. “No, Sheppards.” He chuckled. “And the rest of SSI.”
It killed me to be less effective in protecting her, but I trusted her family to keep her safe.
Nathan glanced at his phone. “Good news, Loverboy. John said Madi is awake and asking to see you.”
“I’ll call the nurse,” Ashley said as Nathan gently held me in place.
“Let go.”
“Matt, you’re strapped to a million machines, including your air supply and IV. Maybe let the nurse unhook you before you run off like the lovesick puppy you are.”
He was right. On all accounts.
“Fuck you, Blaszek.”
“Right back atcha, Robinson.”
Chapter 45
Madi
Dad answered a second knock. He smiled as he opened the door wider.
Jack watched me as he pushed Matt’s wheelchair through the doorway. I made a mental note to apologize to him later for asking to see Matt first.
“Can I have a second with my sister?” Jack asked Matt.
Matt never broke eye contact with me as he nodded and said, "Of course."
"I'll come back later," Jamie said, kissing the top of my head.
I tore my eyes from Matt as Jack replaced Jamie at my side.
“Hey sis.”
“Hi.”
“Damn, you sound awful.”
Turns out, laughing hurt as much as talking.
“Sorry.”
“It’s okay.” Laughing felt good, despite the pain.
“Please don’t ever scare me like that again,” he begged as he hugged me.
