It’ll heal.An arm injury was a small price to pay for Madi’s life.

Hell, I would’ve given up the entire fucking arm.

If it’d come down to it, I would’ve traded my life for hers without hesitation.

Chapter 41

Madi

Tears flowed down my face as the firefighters helped me to my feet.

“He needs an ambulance,” I shouted into my air mask.

“We’re taking you both there now,” the firefighter on my right said as he helped support my weight.

It was only a matter of time before the adrenaline wore off.I’ll probably pass out soon.

The pain was already rearing its ugly head.

The mask supplying my lungs with oxygen was attached to a firefighter, so it was hard to turn and check on Matt.

He’d suffered a severe injury to his arm before finding me.

And he was worried about me.

The cool night air hit my wrists, making me wince. I held them tighter to my chest.

“We’re taking the mask off,” the nice fireman on my left said. “We’ll do all the work.”

I appreciated not having to use my hands.

I barely had time to focus my smoke-dried eyes before my father wrapped me in a gentle hug.

His voice broke as he thanked God I was alive and told me he loved me.

Seeing him again was enough to make me forget the pain in my wrists.

Jamie replaced my father, apologizing through his tears.

Jack and Jay did the same.

I’d never felt as grateful for my obnoxiously overprotective brothers as I did at that moment.

The steady flow of tears left tracks on my soot and blood covered cheeks.

I had so much I wanted to say, but the only words I could find were, thank you, so I repeated them often despite how much it hurt my throat to talk.

Chapter 42

Matt

Ialmost lost her.

She’s safe, I reminded myself.

I started trembling as relief replaced the fear I’d ignored in my desperation to find Madi.

“Bring him some water,” Madi ordered.
