"Is she even still alive?" Tears well in my eyes.
"I...I don't know, Cor. But I have to believe she is." His voice cracks, and as mad as I am at him, I can still recognize that he's suffering, too.
Still, that doesn't make me hate him any less.
I continue down the hall without saying anything else, darting into my bedroom and collapsing into the door behind me. My shoulders slump, and I take in the package in my grasp.
The metal prongs are cold and hard against my fingers when I pry it open. I sit on my bed and dump the contents out, my driver's license very much sprawled out on my comforter.
How it's possible Miller was able to get it so quickly I have no idea, but I'm grateful for it either way.
But that isn't all that was inside. Lying next to my ID is a stack of one hundred dollar bills and a black card. I pick it up, the weight surprising me, as does the texture. Is it metal? This thing is stout enough I could probably bludgeon someone to death with it. I skim my fingers along the bills, counting a minimum of seven of them.
What the hell was he thinking?
A small sticky note on the back side of the black card draws my attention and when I flip it over, it reads:
You've been made an authorized user, get yourself whatever you want x
Is that Miller's handwriting or someone else's?
I hold it to my chest and hope that it's his and savor the strange comfort his scrawled words give. Little did he know the best thing in this entire package would be the off-green Post-it note with his handwriting on it.
I reach across my bed and grab my phone, peeling the case off and tucking the note inside for safekeeping. I give it one final glance and push the case back on and swipe the screen to life.
I send Miller a text.
Me:Hey, I got the package. Pretty sure you included more than just my ID in there...
Only thirty seconds go by before the dots of his text messages appear.
Miller:I'm glad it arrived. Use the card for whatever you want, there isn't a limit.
Cora: So you're saying I could buy a house if I wanted to?
Miller: Or a small island.
Miller: Maybe a big island, I've never priced them so I'm not sure.
I quite literally laugh out loud and my cheeks flush.
Me: Don't tempt me with a good time haha.
Miller: I can look into it if you'd like? Where were you thinking? Caribbean?
I chuckle again and shake my head.
Me: How about Fiji?
Miller: Near Fiji, or actually Fiji?
Me: I don't think Fiji is for sale.
Miller: Anything is for sale if you try hard enough.
Me: How about we start with a bottle of Fiji water?
Miller: I could probably get you the entire company if you want all the water for yourself.
