"Those two," June says and nods toward us.
"Oh, you guys are finally hooking up?" Magnus shakes his head. "Bout damn time."
I briskly glance up at Alec and avoid making direct eye contact, my cheeks no doubt blushing the same way his are.
"We aren't," I admit. "Alec and I are just friends."
Alec stands up straighter next to me. "Yeah, what she said. Friends."
Not to mention,he'snever really made a move more than offering a comforting hug or paying attention to something I said. Those are things friends do. I shouldn't assume he's into me just because I'm into him. It would be nice if the crush was reciprocated, but as far as I know, it's not.
And that's okay. If friends are all we are, I'm okay with that, because he's a damn good one.
"Whatever you guys gotta tell each other to sleep at night..." Magnus focuses his attention on June. "I hope you have a wonderful time tonight. Do you need money or anything?"
"Doyouneed money or anything?" June chirps back, her tone laced with heavy sarcasm.
"I could think of something I need." Magnus raises his eyebrows dramatically.
She grins and slaps his chest. "Didn't you get enough of that earlier?"
"Never." He kisses her forehead again, then her cheeks, and her nose.
"You two are going to make me barf," I say and take off from my spot planted next to Alec.
He follows behind a second later, as do June and Magnus, the two of them hand in hand when I glance back.
"You working tonight?" June leans in close to ask Magnus.
"Yep."
"Be safe, please." There's something she isn't saying, but the way she looks at him leads me to believe he understands completely.
"Always." He gives her one final peck on the lips. "Call me if you need me." Magnus points to Alec. "Keep my girls safe."
It's sweet of Magnus to include me like that when he could easily pretend I don't even exist. But he doesn't. No, Magnus is always very considerate of me when I'm around. Heck, the very first night June went home with Magnus, he brought us both here after a drunken night at the bar and got us pizza—even with pineapple. And when he was eye-fucking and flirting with June at the bar, he never cast me aside or made me feel excluded. It's almost like he knows there's enough room in June's heart and life for all of us, and he doesn't feel the need to fight his way to the front.
Golden retriever vibes for sure. But in a hot, daddykind of way.
Tattooed golden retriever daddy, to be exact.
I chuckle at my own thought, and all of a sudden, it's like everyone is looking right at me. "Sorry," I say. "Thought of something funny that happened at work." Only, that's a blatant lie, and if I'm being honest, Silver marching into my office and storming into the break room to make sure I was okay was not funny at all, actually, it was embarrassing, but a bit hot.
Silver's protectiveness is definitely a turn-on, even if it is because Miller hired him.
Although, it's possible he doesn't takeallhis jobs so seriously. At least, that's what I tell myself to feel like he really does care.
June and I slip into the back of the blacked-out SUV and Alec takes his spot in the driver’s seat. I climb into the third row and give June plenty of space for when we pick up Simon.
"You don't have to sit back there yet," she tells me.
I shrug. "No biggie." I grip the headrest in front of me and lean forward. "Stop being so nervous. Everything is going to be great. Seriously. This is so thoughtful of you." I pause and then add, "Can I tell you a secret?"
June turns toward me and lowers her voice. "Is it about Alec? Did you two really hook up?"
"I can hear you, you know," Alec calls out from the front of the SUV.
I close my eyes slowly and rock my head back and forth. "You're an idiot."
