“Do me a favor and flag down a doctor?” Trevor said to Jamie. “I sent a request, but no one has responded yet. I need an attending doctor to access the regen unit and to get Brendan some painkillers.”

Jamie stepped back out of the room without argument. Trevor caught a glimpse of a suit-clad Secret Service special agent following after his captain before the door slid shut again.

Trevor gestured at the biobed. “Lie down for me.”

Brendan obeyed slowly, trying not to jar his arm. Trevor waited as long as it took for Brendan to get comfortable before placing a drape around the wound. “When Jamie comes back, I can ask him to wait outside until we’re finished if you aren’t comfortable with him being here.”

Brendan blinked up at him, hissing a little as Trevor started to flush out the wound with saline water. “It’s fine. I’m not being admitted.”

“You’re not going back to work.”

“I’m still on the clock.”

“I think getting shot is a good excuse to get some rest.”

Brendan looked like he would have argued except the door slid open again, and a harried-looking doctor in scrubs stepped inside, followed by Jamie.

“Oh,” the woman said when she caught sight of Trevor, pulling up short. “You know how to handle the portable regen unit?”

“I do, Doctor,” Trevor said.

“I can vouch for his expertise,” Jamie added as he stepped aside to get out of the way.

The doctor waved off his words as she accessed the biobed’s computer and initiated the holoscreen. She swiped her palm with its embedded RealIdent over the scanner and tapped in a number of codes on the control panel. “No need. He’s had military training and that transfers in an emergency situation like this. If it’s good enough for the military, it’s good enough for me on a superficial wound.”

“Didn’t feel superficial when I got shot,” Brendan muttered under his breath.

Trevor bit back a laugh. “Thank you, Doctor.”

“I’m signing off on your use of the portable regen unit for the wound only. I’m also giving you restricted access to the drug dispenser unit for local anesthetic, painkillers, and a broad spectrum antibiotic. Come find me if you require anything else,” the doctor said before leaving.

The unit in question beeped behind Trevor where it stood against the wall. He turned to extract the necessary drugs it had just dispensed. It was strange how so many people knew Trevor’s background these days, but in moments like this, he was grateful the doctor had faith in his medical abilities, limited though they were.

Trevor focused on Brendan’s wound, but that didn’t stop him from addressing Jamie. “Where’s your other half?”

“Overseeing the prisoner transport into MDF care,” Jamie replied easily enough.

Trevor paused in mopping up some of the red-tinged saline water with gauze, eyeing Jamie over Brendan’s prone form. “Could’ve sworn the director wanted those three alive.”

Jamie shrugged. “I told Kyle no murder.”

“I’m sure he’s very disappointed about that.”

“I promised I’d make it up to him later.”

The smirk on Jamie’s face told Trevor he really didn’t want to know.

Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan had been Alpha Team’s sniper, a man who made near-impossible shots look easy and prided himself on watching everyone’s six. Kyle was also the only person Trevor had ever met who loved Jamie for who he was and not the family he was born to.

Trevor had fought beside Jamie for years before they were turned into metahumans. Kyle had come along later, but he and his brother, Staff Sergeant Alexei Dvorkin, had fit right in with Alpha Team. It was why, at the time, Trevor and the rest of them had helped to keep Jamie and Kyle’s relationship a secret within the team. They wanted their captain happy, and Kyle made that possible.

In the end, they’d had two years together in secret before the relationship was uncovered back in the spring. The resulting fallout had resulted in their Alpha Team disbanding, every member going their separate way. That didn’t stop Jamie from keeping tabs on the people he considered his. Trevor had long ago gotten used to Jamie’s obsessive need to know his people were okay, even though the team was no longer fighting the good fight.

“And the woman who was brought in?” Trevor asked. “What about her?”

“The MDF will take her into custody after she is treated here.”

“It was a domestic violence situation we pulled her from,” Brendan said.
