Or perhaps they didn’t have her at all. It could be a farce to lure him home.
Could he risk that?
Maman was due here in a few days. He could wait to see if she arrived. But if she didn’t, he’d be wasting precious time. And he’d be taking the coward’s way out.
He’d run once before. He wouldn’t run again.
He stood abruptly, mind made up. He was putting an end to this, one way or another. When he returned, he would try to work things out with Faith.Ifhe returned. But one thing was for certain—he refused to live in fear. He would face these men, determine whether or not they had his mother, and then—God willing—he’d come back to Faith.
If she would have him.
He didn’t bother packing clothing or food. If he was going, he needed to leavenow. But he did take a moment write a quick note and to pause outside Faith’s door. He placed a hand against the wood. Was she asleep inside? Or was she as awake as he was, tormented by thoughts that she’d made the wrong choice in marrying him?
“I’ll prove that I’m worthy of your love,” he whispered to the door.
He only hoped he lived to see that happen.
