“He’s the one in the papers.”
“Really?”
Milo nodded.
“He’s hot.”
“Hassan!” said Kieran, horrified.
“What? Even you said you’d go there.”
“That was hypothetical and just about the aesthetic. Milo is literally sleeping with the enemy.”
Hassan rolled his eyes. “Fuck this. I’m going back to bed. I’ve got another eighteen-hour shift later.”
He walked away without another word. Kieran glared at Milo again and went to open his mouth, no doubt to start another rant, but Milo’s phone rang, silencing Kieran.
“Milo, they know about you,” said Edward. He sounded so concerned, and that made him love the man even more. He needed to tell him the next time they were in the same room.
“I’m aware. I’ve got Kieran glaring at me forsleeping with the enemy.”
Edward chuckled. At least Milo could still make him laugh.
“I’m sending a car for you. It’ll take you to Derek’s. If you’re being followed, they’ll know how to lose the tail.”
“How long?”
“Five minutes.”
“Will you be there?”
“Soon. I promise. Just let me get you somewhere safe for now.”
This was the moment he wanted to tell Edward how he felt about him, but Kieran was still glaring at him, and it washard not to laugh. Edward suggested he pack clothes for a couple of days, and see if he could work from home. He didn’t tell Edward he hadn’t been in since Patrick had said he was going to run the story. Milo knew if he was near his boss, he would say something he’d regret. He knew it was highly probable that Patrick hadn’t had any choice in the matter, but Milo still needed someone to blame.
Once he’d finished the call, he jumped up and pulled his stuff together.
“Where is he taking you?” asked Kieran.
“I’m just going to lie low for a couple of days.”
“I still can’t believe you’ve been fucking a politician.”
“Well, I have, so deal with it, or piss off.”
“I live here!”
“I was just making a dramatic statement, Jesus. Can you bugger off. I’ve only got a few minutes to pack and be ready.”
“Fine, but we’re not done here. I have questions.”
“I’m sure you do, but not now, Kieran.”
He frowned again and went to walk away.
“Kieran.”
He turned back.
