Heat races through my body at exactly what that means.Fuck, this woman twists me into knots.

Chapter Thirteen

Lana

I’ve only ever wished for someone who would love me for me. -Lana

“You and that boy could set this whole place on fire with all that heat you guys give off,” Fiona quips as we walk into her trailer.

I can’t stop the blush that covers my cheeks. I shrug. “He’s just my bodyguard.” I had been trying to keep things quiet, but I fear that ship has sailed. Obviously, I can’t keep my hands off him.

Fiona rolls her eyes. “Sure, sweetheart. Whatever you say. Anyway, let’s go over that scene again. It’s a big one.”

She’s not wrong. The scene is emotional and powerful, brought about by two seasons of her character trying everything to avoid confrontation with her mother.

I scan Fiona’s trailer. It always amazes me the people that she’s met. Presidents and movie stars alike. Fiona was aroundwhen Hollywood was really Hollywood. I’m so lucky that she took this job. She’s a phenomenal actress.

I pick up the script for the next week. “Let’s get to it.”

A few moments later, we’re still working on tackling the very difficult subject matter.

“Mama, you were never there. You never tried to be there. I tried…” I gulp back real emotion as I think of my own mother who wasn’t much different, “I tried to be perfect, but it was never good enough. You always found what you wanted somewhere else. In drugs, in men…” I trail off and a tear slips down my cheek.Fuck, this is hard.

“I was never going to be a good mother, honey. It’s just not the way the women in our family are made.” Fiona places a hand on her hip, doing a perfect job of creating the nuance of this very complicated person. “Look at you and Tess. She’s gonna end up pregnant and alone like you.”

The scene reaches a climactic point, one in which things could turn violent.

I raise my hand, but slowly lower it.

At that point, Fiona goes off script. She’s supposed to turn her back to me and throw a quip over her shoulder. Instead, she stalks closer to me.

“Fi…” I start, confused about the change.

I watch Fiona’s green eyes change in an instant. Something seems to snap within her. Where there was calm emotion, now there’s a dark crest of madness.

She tilts her head and sneers at me. “You know, I used to be you. At the height of my career, I was the cute one.” She surveys me from head to toe. “Except I was actually sexy whereas you’re…” she flicks a hand at my figure, “just average.”

Confusion roils in my gut. “Fiona…what are you doing?”

I stumble backwards as she uses her finger to push me in the chest. “You…you’re not even grateful. You shouldn’t even be apart of this world. You have no idea what it means to struggle, fuck it…to age! Do you know what it’s like to age in a world that thinks you’re over the hill at thirty?”

“You…you’re the one who…” Realization hits me like a sledgehammer. “You did it all? The notes…the cat?” I feel nauseous and struggle to stay upright.

An evil smile spreads across her face. “That damn cat was a stray, like you. It deserved to be taken care of…just like you.”

I only catch a glint of metal in her hand before I feel the pain. A slash across one cheek.

I glance at the door, calculating my odds of escape.

Grainger. I need Grainger…

Grainger

Now that she’s mine, I’m never letting her go. -Grainger

“What have you got for me?” I answer the phone without preamble. Henry has been part of my crew since I opened the firm and he’s the best IT guy in the business. I’m hoping he’s dug up more about the people in Lana’s life.
