“Myles! Focus,” she snaps.
“Fuck I love hearing you say my name.” I close my eyes again as my head relaxes further into the mattress.
“No! Myles. Stay awake!”
“Just let me take a short nap, then I’ll leave.” Sex obviously isn’t happening now. I’m too far gone.
My head lifts, then is whipped back down. My eyes open to find her shaking me back awake.
“Why…” I groan.
“You need to leave Badlands. Now!”
“I will. Just give me a few…”
*Slap*
Fuck! Did she just smack me?
“Listen. You need to go now!”
I’m shocked. Did I do something wrong? I know I’m drunk but even drunk me is usually a mostly nice guy.
“I’m sorry for whatever I said. Did I do something…” I’m still slurring.
“No. You didn’t do anything. You just need to go. Please.”
“Why?” I ask as she is unhooking my restraints.
“Just go,” she huffs as she unhooks the final restraint that was around my ankle. I sit up slowly. The room is still swaying. Where the hell is my jacket?
“Here.” She hands me my jacket, throws it actually.
“Lulu…”
“Don’t! Just…Get the fuck out of here and don’t come back.” She turns away and walks to the mini bar. She pours and downs a shot, then another.
I catch her reflection in the grungy mirror behind the minibar. There’s so much pain in those eyes. Those silver eyes that will haunt my dreams for the rest of my life. Nothing even fucking happened with this woman, yet I already feel like I will never be able to forget her.
Her eyes close and I watch a single tear catch the light as it slips down her cheek. I want to beg her to tell me what happened. What I did. Fucking hell, Myles. Why did you have to drink so fucking much?
Her head drops forward as her shoulders slump. I can hear the shaky inhale of breath before the long exhale.
I throw my jacket on as I turn to leave. My hand grips the doorknob. The jolt of everything has slowly forced the drunken fog to dissipate. As I step out the door, I turn back one last time. She hasn’t moved. She won’t turn around. Whatever I did…I must have fucked up bad.
“I’m so sorry. Goodbye, Sunshine.”
CHAPTER 5
Mina
Goodbye, Sunshine…
When the door closes and I hear the lock click into place, my stomach flips. The feeling you get at the top of the Rollercoaster track, just before it drops. Over the years there have been bits and pieces of my life before the accident that come back to me. Like flickers of a movie sped up, but out of order. It’s confusing and sometimes I don’t know what’s really a memory, or just a dream reality I may have thought of.
The memory that hits me knocks me down to the floor on my knees. My stomach heaves and my chest tightens as sobs wrack my body. It was raining. I remember someone saying, “Goodbye, Sunshine.” I remember the sound of glass shattering. The sound of my mother screaming. The horrible sound of metal being crushed. There was water everywhere. Cold, dark water.
Fuck, I can’t breathe!
