I can’t face her yet. I can’t.
“Uhh, sure. Thanks.”
“No problem. Where’re you headed?” he asks as he turns the car around and speeds off.
A blaring horn forces me to look back. Mina is flying, trying to catch up. The guy glances in the mirror and smirks before gunning it.
“My car’s near Badlands. Thanks.”
“Perfect.”
I glance behind us again to see her truck falling further and further back.
“Crazy fucking driver,” he growls as I adjust to sit forward.
“Yeah,” I laugh.
Something seems off about this dude. As we pass through town, a gnawing feeling is causing my stomach to sink. I can see Badlands up on the left. I pull out my keys and click it twice to unlock my car.
“You can just drop me off out...”
*Click*
The sound of the lock echoes in the car. I try the door, but it won’t unlock.
“Hey, buddy. You can let me out here. That’s my car.”
He pulls the Range Rover around to the back alley. He slows and parks the car by the back entrance.
“So, Myles…” he practically hisses my name. Who the fuck is this guy? And how the fuck does he know my name? “I want you to tell me what the fuck happened to my father!”
CHAPTER 9
Mina
“Ihave to go after him!”
“No, you really don’t!” Mark argues.
“It’s fucking storming. He could get hit by lightning.” As if on cue, a bolt of lightning lights up the sky.
“Mina, he’s weird as fuck. Just let him go,” he huffs as he sits back down in the booth. It took forever to clean up because I bumped the table and it knocked over a coffee cup, plus the orange juice that went everywhere.
“He wasn’t weird.”
“He was. He’s old and a loner.” He closes his eyes and rests his head against the back of the booth.
“How the fuck would you know he’s a loner?” I slump down in the seat across from him as he cracks one eye open to glare at me.
“Really? You of all people are asking me that?” he laughs.
“Are you implying I’m a loner?” I cross my arms over my chest, which just makes him laugh harder.
“You used to be.” He takes my hand in his. “It’s one of the first things that I noticed about you…”
“What was?”
“The sadness in your eyes. You were lonely, but at the same time, you didn’t want anyone to get close.”
