“Oh my goodness, Carlos is great. He really is the best guy I’ve ever met. And definitely the hottest.”
I hold up a hand. “I’m gonna have to stop you there. I’m very happy for both of you, but I don’t need to hear any more.”
Her laugh is loud. “Alright, fine. But we should double date. Or, like, have a couples party with the Nash Security guys.”
“Couples party sounds like a swingers party, so that’s a hard pass for me.”
She throws up her hands. “Oh my god, fine, abarbecueor something with everyone.”
I laugh as she stomps out of my office. My cell phone starts to ring, and I sober when I see the name.
“Tony, I was actually going to call you today.”
“Oh, really? Did you already make a decision?”
Sitting back in my chair, I tap my pen on my thigh. “Yes and no. I have a couple of questions for you first.”
“Alright. Shoot.”
“Did you follow me the other day?” Carlos was never able to pull anything useful from any of the footage, so we were at a loss for who it could be.
His laugh comes through the speaker. “Oh, shit, yeah. I meant to tell you. That was some impressive driving. We talked about seeing if you were available for hire.”
I never thought I’d be comforted by the fact that mobsters were following me and not someone else.
“Okay, good to know. Next question: Did you break into Blake’s house yesterday?”
He doesn’t respond right away. But finally says, “No, that wasn’t my family. But there’s a rumor going around.”
“What’s the rumor?” I’m actually a little scared to find out what this could be.
“Word on the street is, ol’ Blakey boy stole a shit-ton of those fucking drugs from Goodwin. And Goodwin told him he either returns the drugs or pays him a crazy amount of money. Like half a million or some shit.”
It’s my turn to stay silent.
“If I had to guess, it was Goodwin’s guys looking for the drugs or hoping Blake had a safe with cash in it they could steal.”
While the house is full of expensive items, it’s not exactly easy to haul out a bunch of knick-knacks and TVs. And jewelry is too easily traceable if it was pawned. So Tony’s probably right.
I toss my glasses onto my desk and rub my fingers into my eyes.
Blake is a fucking idiot, stealing from a goddamn drug dealer.

“Ibrought you lunch.” Anna holds up a bag as she walks into my office.
“Did you get yourself some, too, like I told you?” Any time I’ve asked Anna to get me something since I’ve been on office arrest, I’ve insisted she buy something for herself as payment.
“Yep, I figured we could eat together.” She sets the bag on my desk and sits down. “I feel like it’s been too long since we’ve chatted.”
I smile and open the bag. After the disaster of a day I had yesterday, I’m happy to spend some time with Anna. I won’t burden her with everything, but it might be nice to talk to her about a few things.
“It has been a while. Everything’s been so crazy; I feel like I don’t even know up from down anymore.”
“Do you want to talk about what happened yesterday?”
