I stepped throughthe portal and stretched.
It was good to get away from that room.
From that man. Chester hadn’t left after being freed.
And he…bothered me.
The corridor echoed with gasps—one from each direction.
Glancing one way then the other, I grinned.
Oh, how perfect.
Kimber’s hand flew to her mouth. “Oz?”
Gwynnore’s eyes were wide. “Oz!”
They locked glances with each other, and I could see the gears working. I did so love when people started to play the game without me explaining the rules.
“How do you know him?” Kimber asked, circling widely around me, heading for Gwen.
“He visited me in the caves.” Gwen eyed me suspiciously. “I thought he was a hallucination. You?”
“The ruins of the temple and the stables after we rescued you.” Kimber went pale, and Gwen’s whole body vibrated. They both eyed me warily.
They were smart women.
It was a shame that, in the end, one of them was going to have to die.
“How are you here?” Gwen asked. “No one can use the portals like that. You don’t have any Original amulets.”
The chuckle escaped me. “My pretty, I don’t need silly trinkets. I’m far more powerful than to need an object to assist me.”
Both of them drew back and hit the wall behind them.
“What do you want?” Kimber’s hand trembled over the pommel of her sword. That one would bear watching. She was twitchy.
I had enjoyed her killing spree, though. Her fine work with both gun and sword had been delightful.
Gwynnore’s hand was hovering over a gun on her hip. That one did love her weapons. And she was excellent with them.
Dorian and Belshazzar had picked excellent companions.
I was proud of them.
But the time had long passed for them to fulfill their missions. It was time for me to force their hand.
“Honestly? You. Both of you.”
They had their weapons drawn on me in a blink. Rather impressive for mere vampires.
