I picked the crystal off the ground—and a shockingly clear picture of a victory burst into living color in my mind.

“It worked,” I whispered. “It worked!”

“Go,” Rilen said. “Go tell Gwen. You’re the only one who seems to work correctly after that.”

Laughing, I jumped to my feet and darted from the room. The command center was on the same floor but far on the other side, and I ran as fast as possible.

Halfway there, I could see Gwen running for me.

“It worked!” I screamed.

“It worked!” She screamed back.

The bang was deafening, and I was instantly blinded by the light that swelled and flashed between us.
