Dangerous women, the Talleys of Masterson County. Dangerous, dangerous women.
“Why, Dr. Agent Knight, I think that might have actually been a positive comment. I’m shocked. Of course, it would be about Marin. She turns cranky men like you into tame little puppies with one itty bitty smile and a wave of her hand. It’s very fun to watch.”
“Sure she does.” Sunny’s younger sister probably could. Some women just had a kind of allure. Her sister was one of them. But…so was this creature in front of him. “You are frightening women, you Talleys. What’s going on in your convoluted brain? Sunshine, rainbows, hearts, flowers, unicorns? Warm fuzzy puppies?”
“I am not a My Little Pony, my dear man. I am not. But…something you said earlier. About the guy we are looking for. This wasn’t his first rodeo. We need to dig deeper. Find others. And we both know there have to be others. See if we can tie them together somehow.”
She’d gone from sunshine and chaos to intent and intense in an instant. He was just now starting to get used to the way she did that. That brain of hers just never stopped. Left a man dizzy every single time.
“Sounds like a good place to start.”
“I’m going to call Jac and Dani, get them started. I suspect this spreads out. But is it local, or regional, or what?”
“Isn’t that the question?” It could be any of those. Hell, even national or international. Killers didn’t often respect boundaries. But they did tend to have territories where they felt more comfortable.
“That it is…now, eat. Or I’m going to take those fries. They taste just like the ones at home, and I need to think.”
“Then think. I’ll just sit here patiently and wait.”
“Patience isn’t exactly your top virtue.”
He just looked at her, and waited.
Chapter 10
They were entering dangerous territory. She was dropping off right next to him. A drowsy Miranda always pushed his buttons real fast. A drowsy Miranda…alone with him…with a bed right there—temptation he wasn’t going to be able to resist for long.
He was just a man, damn it. And this woman?—
It was time she went back to her own room before he did something completely stupid.
During the light of the day, he kept himself in check with her easily enough. They were professionals, and damned good at what they did. Neither of them wanted to screw that up. But when it was like this, and just the two of them, and darkness surrounded them…every thought of resisting what she did to him flew right out of his head.
Knight knew himself well.
His one weakness now had cinnamon hair and the most perfect mouth he’d ever seen. A mouth made for dark things that most every man with a pulse fantasized about. And that was just the start. He wanted nothing more right now than to get his damned hands on her—and damn the consequences. Therein lay the danger.
“Ok, Sunny. Back to your own room.” He stood, probably faster than he should have. She jerked back and looked at him. Those green eyes just blinked.
She had on her glasses, meaning she’d taken out the contacts. The eyes were still just as green.
She had been seriously blessed in genetics to get eyes just like that. But it wasn’t her eyes he wanted to see up close and personal. And that was why this sweet-smelling temptation had to get her ass back to her own room.
Right now.
“Yes, boss,” she drawled. “I forgot you had a nine-o’clock bedtime, and it is way past that.”
But she was the one yawning.
“Get out. Rest. We’ll pick this up in the morning.”
He reached out and did something completely stupid. Knight touched her.
Knight knew better than that. He had rules against it, damn it. The temptation was just too real. He used his grip on her hand to pull her out of the chair. “You better go soon. Call the kid. Or he’ll be in bed before you can.”
“He’s with my dad and stepmom now. Two hour time difference.”
“Doesn’t he have school?”
