Before he could move, Falcon had pulled out a gun and aimed it at him. Zach dived to the floor as he fired, and the sheriff howled in pain.
“Clearly you’ve lost your edge.” Zach rolled back to his feet as adrenaline coursed through him. In seconds, he was across the room and had the man’s throat between his hands. “If I find you have touched anyone I care about in any way, I will hang you myself,” Zach snarled.
“They are already dead,” Falcon spat at him. “Revenge will be mine!”
“What have you planned?”
He laughed in Zach’s face.
Zach pulled the gun from his pocket. Jerking Falcon’s head back, he pressed it to his temple.
“Step a foot closer,” he said to the sheriff who had staggered nearer, weapon raised, “and I shoot him.”
The sheriff retreated and lowered his gun. Blood was seeping from a wound in his hand.
Falcon laughed again. “Do it. I will never leave here, and I want to die.”
Dropping him, Zach punched him hard in the nose. The man crumpled to the ground. He then ran from the room.
“Zach!” Gabe was roaring his name from the hall outside when he arrived.
“We need to speak to Geraint, now! Falcon has set things in motion to get revenge on the two who brought him down. We need their names so we can protect them.”
“We heard a gunshot!” Nathan said, running behind Zach.
“Falcon shot at me, and missed. He got the sheriff.”
Gabe swore. “You should not have gone in there alone.”
They sprinted from the prison and mounted with speed. Soon, they were galloping through London.
“It’s unlikely Geraint will be at the church,” Gabe said from beside him.
“We will try there first, and if he’s not, we’ll send word to meet us there,” Zach added.
When they arrived, it was Zach who banged hard four times on the door. It was a faint hope at best that Geraint would be inside, but they had to try.
The door opened.
“Why are you here? What has happened?” Geraint asked them.
“Besides us, who was involved in bringing down Falcon?” Zach demanded.
The man frowned. “Come inside and we will talk.”
“There is no time. Falcon just told me he has plans for revenge in place. He will make those who caught him pay. Who were they, Geraint?”
“They are undercover. He cannot know who they are.”
“He said he has a contact inside Alexius. We need those names so we can protect them,” Gabe said.
“The traitor,” Geraint said. “We know we have one, and it seems it is him that is behind keeping Falcon from being hanged. I fear he has done much damage.”
“If we are to warn them, Geraint, we must know their identities,” Zach demanded.
“They are undercover,” he said again. “No one can know who they are.”
“Perhaps a traitorous Alexius member has found out,” Gabe said. “Give us the names, and we will keep them safe.”
