Page 75 of Detecting Danger

Working his way through the voices, Warwick recognized several members of his family having a heated argument with each other. Gus just called James a supercilious pig. Had he not been so tense, he would have laughed. Eden was now screaming at Dev. More smashing glass.

“That’s the distraction we needed. I can’t see outside, but clearly some fools are having a fight. Let’s go,” a voice beyond the wall said. “You go first, Lady Samantha second. I will follow.”

“They’re coming,” Warwick whispered.

Wolf nodded to say they were at the door now. Seconds later, it opened, and a man appeared, followed by Samantha, her bound hands before her, a gag in her mouth.

“Run!” the man cried when he saw them.

The door slammed before the last man appeared. Warwick picked Samantha up and braced her against the wall, covering her with his body. A fist and a thud told him someone had hit the floor. Looking, he found Wolf still standing. Ash was trying to get the door open.

“Bastard’s locked it!”

“We have her, Eden. One of the men is escaping!” Warwick roared. “Watch for him!”

Ash ran for the stairs.

“I have you, Samantha.” Warwick eased back and removed her gag. He then released her hands, and his fingers came away covered in her blood.

“I need to see how bad your injury is.”

“Why is this happening, Warwick?” Her blue eyes looked huge in her pale face. She was in shock, her body trembling.

“I don’t know, but you’re safe now. Let me look at you, Samantha. Please.” He removed her jacket, her hiss of breath telling him it was her right arm that hurt. “I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

“Someone is trying to take me away from everything I love,” she whispered.

“They won’t succeed. Knife, Wolf.”

Taking the blade his cousin handed him, Warwick slit the sleeve of her dress. He peeled off her blood-soaked glove. The wound was above her elbow and not huge, but his guess was deep. Swallowing down the rage, he took the necktie Wolf held out and wrapped it round the injury, tying off the ends.

The thud of feet told him her brothers had arrived.

“Your brothers are here, sweetheart,” he whispered into her ear.

All three of them burst into the room, followed by Eden. Dev was last with Cam.

Warwick stepped back reluctantly, and she ran sobbing at James. Max and Rory crowded in, hugging her.

“How bad is your arm?” James demanded.

“’Tis but a graze.”

“It is not a graze,” Warwick snarled. He had a mist of red over his eyes, and he wanted answers to the hell she was going through.

“Is he awake?”

Wolf nudged the man on the floor, and he moaned.

Warwick dropped to his haunches. Grabbing the man’s hair, he tugged until their eyes met.

“Tell me who is behind this, or I shoot you.”

“I don’t know his name.” The man spat at him.

“Let me at him,” Max growled.

“I’ve got this,” Warwick said. “Take Samantha out, Eden. Take her home to Lilly.”
