“I’ve had a lot of practice, as have you.”

He could smell her scent. Delicate with a hint of something floral, the same one she’d always worn or since she started wearing scent, that was.

“You are always telling me off for frowning, and yet lately I’ve seen you doing that many times,” she said.

“I have much on my mind.”

“Do you have many cases? You and the twins, I mean? Is the investigation service busy?”

“It is. Since I got back to London, we have had many people requesting our help. Yesterday a man wandered in stating he had reason to believe he had a son he had yet to meet, and could we help locate him?”

The lights dimmed, and a few of the children squealed with excitement.

“That sounds intriguing. I could help now that I’m back if you like. I mean, I know the business and—”

“No.”

She blew out a quick breath.

“I mean—”

“I know what you meant, Warwick.” Her tone was cold now. “You never liked me working in your office. Never wanted me to be part of it and will make sure I never do so again.”

“That’s not—”

“Prepare to be amazed!” Mr. Rolland’s voice boomed through the air as he rose on the platform before them.

Warwick could feel Samantha withdrawing from him. Her arm no longer brushed his as she inched sideways.

“Problem?” Wolf asked, green eyes alert in the dark theatre.

“No.”

Wolf looked around him to where Samantha stood, both her hands on Daisy’s shoulders.

“If you say so.”

“I know so.”

She is not my Raven.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

“Take Jaccob,” Warwick said to his cousin. He then closed the distance between him and Samantha.

“Let me explain.”

“There is nothing more to say.” She kept her eyes forward, chin elevated. “The twins told me that Mr. Tillby will be leaving your investigative service soon, and you never told me that or that I could come back to work.”

He could hear the hurt in her voice and hated he’d been the one to put it there.

“Be reasonable, Samantha. You can’t come back to work—”

“You’ve made that clear.”

Before he could explain his reasons and that she was safer at home, she moved, and then suddenly Dorrie was next to him.

“What did you say to Samantha?” his sister hissed at him.
