Dear God.

“Then we must get your brother off theGodfrey, Miss Knight. Then the rest can be dealt with,” Lord Sinclair said.

“It’s my hope we find something as to the Merchant’s identity or location on board,” Zachariel Deville said.

The men all looked grim, and Ruby felt sick.

“If you will let us help you,” Harry Sinclair said. “We are rather useful at night, both seeing and hearing,” he added, looking at Mr. Howarth and his cousins.

“We would be grateful,” Forrest said.

They left the ship, as darkness had now closed in around them. Moving left, they walked along the buildings to stand closer to where theGodfreywas moored.

“There are eight people on board,” Lord Sinclair said.

“Four are below the decks, and four above,” Harry Sinclair added.

Ruby wasn’t sure how they knew this when she could see nothing, and definitely not through wood.

“I’m not asking you how you know that, Sinclairs,” Zach said.

“Probably for the best you don’t,” Harry Sinclair said.

“I just heard a man say that someone called Gigs was watching the boy. This could be your brother, Miss Knight,” Warwick Sinclair said.

Ruby pressed a fist to her mouth to stop the sob escaping.

“Excellent. I’m not sure how you heard that, Warwick, and I don’t want to know,” Zach said.

“If I just knew his color,” Lord Sinclair said.

His eyes seemed to glow, even in the dark, as did Harry Sinclair’s.

“Color?” Zach queried. The words were waved away by Harry.

“I think he’s in the captain’s cabin,” Warwick Sinclair said.

“Harry, Warwick, and I will take the men on the deck and hold them until you have Adam secured,” Lord Sinclair said.

“Then let’s go. Ruby, you need to stay here as watch. If you see anyone arrive and board the ship, you need to let us know,” Forrest said.

“I want to come.”

“Then that would mean one of us would need to stay down here, and if we need to fight our way out, I’m sure I would fare better than you.”

He sounded rational, and she knew what he said made sense. But she did not want to stay here.

“Can you whistle or make a noise that we would hear?” Nathan Deville asked her.

She made Mrs. Chen’s bird noise.

“That is an excellent mistle thrush, Miss Knight,” Warwick Sinclair said. “And will do perfectly.”

“Ruby, stay here behind these barrels, and do not come out no matter what,” Forrest said to her. “Promise me.” He grabbed her shoulders and gave her a little shake.

“I promise.”

“Good girl.” He kissed her in one hard, fast move, then pulled something out of his inside pocket and handed it to her. “Point and shoot if you need to.”
