“A fire,” Ash said. They all looked at him, as if wanting him to continue.

“How did it start?” Cam asked when he remained silent. “Was it an accident or deliberate?”

“What does that signify?” Ash didn’t want to tell them because it would get back to Gus.

Cam rolled his eyes, but it was Max who spoke.

“It signifies because if it is deliberate, then someone wanted your ship turned to ashes and likely hoped you were on it.”

Ash was not used to sharing confidences with anyone but Baron, and even then rarely. He loathed talking about himself and never told anyone anything they could one day hold over him.

“Your silence suggests it was deliberate,” Lord Ryder said.

“Well?” Cam demanded.

“Well what?”

“Was it deliberate?” Cam said slowly.

“Look. It’s best that none of you are involved in this. I will leave London soon—”

“Lord save me from fools who wish to isolate themselves from people who can help them.” Cam sighed.

“I am not a fool,” Ash snapped.

“Then stop acting like one.”

He and Cam glared at each other as the carriage rolled away from the warehouse with Ash still inside.

Bloody bothering hell!

CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

“Let me explain something to you.” Max shot Cam a look. “Family looks out for family. You are family, therefore we look out for you.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“The man who did this is dangerous,” Ash said. He would tell them that much.

“We’re quite good at dealing with dangerous people. Thus far we’ve had many pass through our lives in the process of gaining family members,” Cam said.

“That’s true,” Lord Ryder agreed. “The man who wanted Wolf’s wife removed wasn’t very nice.”

“Or the one who abducted Somer.” The words were spoken by Cam, and while they’d been said in a reasonable tone, there was no doubting the flash of anger in his eyes.

“We could go on,” Max said.

“I don’t need your help. I am going to see a private investigator,” Ash said, hoping that would shut them up. “I need to track a man down.”

“Who is he? Perhaps we could help?” Lord Ryder said.

“No.”

“No, he is nameless?” Lord Ryder asked.

“His is not a name that you need to know,” Ash said between his teeth.
