She tried to dunk him under the water, but he was stronger, so she went under instead. He was feeling smug about that when she surfaced and then swam away from him. He watched as she dived under, waiting for her to surface. He yelped when her hands grabbed his ankle and pulled him under.
They played for a while, and then she floated in his arms, her head resting on his shoulder, legs wrapped around his waist. He’d miss her when she left.
“I can’t think of a more beautiful place in this world, can you, Cubby?”
He looked at the mountains, the cool clear waters of the lake, and then back at her.
“No, it would take something special to beat this.”
“I look at those trees and wonder who is up there and what they’re planning next. I think about Jilly and Melanie and what they suffered and wonder why. What possible reason could anyone have to kill them?”
“Me too,” Cubby said. “The gun used to kill each girl was the same.”
“We thought that, though.”
“Let’s go back, princess, you’re getting cold and you need to feed me. Then you’re going to do what you’re good at, Detective McBride.”
“What’s that?” She yawned.
“Detecting.” He kissed her jaw.
“Oh that.” She gave him that sexy smile again.
“Yes, that, and I’ll give you a head start seeing as I won.”
She made a scoffing sound, then she was off, arms and legs flying as she swam away from him. He caught her before the boat, but let her get out first so he could look at her long bare legs. When had a pair of legs turned him on so much?
Pulling himself out, he touched a drop of water on her shoulder, following it with his finger as it rolled down her back. She shivered as he lightly caressed her damp skin. Flicking the catch to her top, she let it fall from her breasts. He cupped them, pulling her back against his body.
“I can’t get enough of you.”
He kissed her neck, nipping the skin with his teeth then soothing it with his tongue. He slipped his fingers into the front of her bikini and found her, wet and waiting. Stroking the hard bead between her thighs, he heard her breath catch as he pushed his fingers inside her. She arched back into his chest as his other hand rolled her nipple between his fingers, and shuddered to her climax.
“Oh my,” was all she could manage.
“My thoughts exactly,” he rasped, stripping off her bikini bottoms. He then sat on one of the deck seats. Gripping her hips, he urged her to straddle his thighs. She took him inside her as she sat, silken tissues stretching around his erection as she lowered down onto him.
“Christ, Katie, you feel good.”
“Yesssss.” She grabbed a handful of his hair and pulled it hard, and he responded by kissing her. Lips and teeth clashed as he drove up into her as she came down.
Surrounded by the cool night air, he made love to Katie McBride and knew that he’d never felt this way before, never needed another woman like he did her.
“Katie!” He roared her name as he came, and she gripped his neck and held on as she did the same.
He couldn’t breathe; his lungs were tight, head light, and he had Katie in a fierce grip, pressed to his body as if he would never let her go.
“Cubby?” She stirred in his arms, forcing him to loosen them.
“I’m all right; you just took my breath for a minute there.”
“Me too.”
He made himself lift her off him and stand her on her feet. “I need food after that, woman, so go get me some.”
He couldn’t see her face because she turned away from him, and only when he heard the shower did he breathe easier. They hadn’t used a condom. What the hell was the matter with him he never took that kind of risk? He didn’t let emotion rule his head, had decided long ago there was no place to feel like this in his life. Pulling on his clothes, he gave himself a talking to, and when she emerged from the shower, dressed in nothing but a long t-shirt, he thought he was back to normal. Turned out he was wrong. His heart was beating way too fast.
“Katie, we didn’t use a condom.”
