“Silva was a Doll, a long time ago. It’s the reason I increased our security. She and several others escaped,” Gideon explains, appearing less polished than normal.

I hate that term, and I appreciate that the Widows essentially renamed themselves in a way that suited them. Gideon is a fucking asshole.

His hair is messy, and he seems out of sorts. In fact, it takes him a second to smooth out his clothing before he shoves Silva’s weapon in his pocket, and his pressed lips telegraph his displeasure before he makes a move. His fists slam into her stomach as if trying to prove something, and her pained sounds make it hard to remain still. We can’t move too soon, or we’ll both die.

My heart screams at me, my teeth grinding together so hard I may have cracked a tooth. Yet, Silva continues to tell me how much she loves me through the bond while I keep my shit together. It doesn’t keep the homicidal thoughts fromunraveling, and I begin to imagine the way his skin will look when it’s peeled from his muscles. I bet it’ll be a pretty fucking sight.

“You’re an asshole,” Kyren growls in my ear. I knew it would only be a matter of time before he overrode everything. “Cavalry has been called in. We are clearing the house and killing everyone we come in contact with.”

The unsaid “take care of our girl” rings in my ear as I press a knife into Silva’s left hand as she wheezes from Gideon’s blow. She hangs between my arms, appearing pathetic, even though I know that’s the last thing she is. A gun is coming next, but I can’t move too soon. Instead, I hold Silva up as she struggles to breathe, hating myself for every second of it.

While I’ve trained for this, and have had Harlan beat the fuck out of me on missions to prove his loyalty to the men in charge, Silva has not. She’s not a mercenary or any kind of agent. This should not fucking be happening right now!

I can still feel her glow of love through the bond to tell me she understands, but I continue to feel like the shit on a shoe tracked through puddles and gum.

Maybe I’ll let her tase me to make it even.

“Are you going to sell her? I bet I could put out the fire inside her,” another of the alphas says.

And we’re done here.

While they argue, they pay a lot less attention to the hired help. Easing my hands away from her arms, I keep my eyes on them all as I remove my gun from its holster and silently add my silencer to it before placing it in her hand with a warning squeeze to wait.

We need to play this smart, and we have to make sure that Gideon doesn’t die in the crossfire. We also don’t have much time if everyone is coming in with guns blazing.

I draw my own firearm and add the silencer and then press my lips to her ear.

“Gideon first,mi amor. Then shoot to kill everyone on the right side of the room. I’ll make sure Gideon stays down.”

As his muscle looks over, he finds that my hands are back on her forearms, keeping her in place. It’s an illusion, though he doesn’t know it.

“Kill her or sell her, sir, but her presence is offensive,” he says. “What if there are more people with her?”

Time to move.

The idiot gets a bullet to the face, and Silva is already sinking her knife into Gideon’s pelvis and twisting it for maximum damage. It’s smart, she doesn’t have to reach very high, before he falls forward with a groan. It doesn’t hit anything too vital, but it hurts like a son of a bitch. Kicking him in the face, I continue to shoot.

Like fish in a goddamn barrel.Yee fucking haw.

The dulled sound of bullets flying feels much quieter than when people were shooting earlier due to the silencers. No one has a chance to draw, though many of them reach for their weapons. Silva takes a step to the right to punch what looks to be the accountant as he attempts to run past her. I told her everyone but Gideon needs to die and I meant it.

Except, when Silva throat punches someone, she does it a little differently than other people. She uses her knife for a bloody purpose. The gurgle of the accountant ends with a kill shot from me, and I make sure to stomp on Gideon’s face as he attempts to join the fight by reaching for the weapon in his pocket.

Silva comes over and kicks away the gun, glaring at the scum at our feet.

“I don’t think so,” I say to Gideon, looking around the room. “Silva, will you check the others? Kill shots to the head, baby. Don’t get close enough to check pulses.”

While I tried to shoot my people in the head, as did Silva, sometimes it’s not always a sure thing as people are farther from you. I hear Silva do as I asked by pumping two bullets in each of their heads, while I pull zip ties from my pocket and wrangle Gideon’s wrists behind his back.

Removing his other weapons doesn’t take me long, and then Silva is back at my side. I suppose it's a bit of luck for me that he was too stunned to reach for any of them. Gideon’s face is a mess, but it's still not enough.

It may never be.

“Good?” I ask, looking up at her as I stand.

“Yeah. Don’t touch me yet, okay? I don’t want to be a wimp and cry,” she whispers.

“An adrenaline dump is normal,” I say gently. “I won’t be nice to you yet if you’re not ready,mi amor.Keep being the badass that you are. Pain level?”
