“Don’t worry. We mostly have supernaturals working here, and the few human servers know about us, so there is no need to hide your abilities.”
“I would love to work here. Thank you for the opportunity,” Starla gushed.
Autumn laughed. “You’re actually doing me a huge favor. We always have people applying to be servers and baristas, but we’ve been looking for a few good bakers for a while now. Added to that, you already know who I am, and you haven’t run screaming. So, I consider that a bonus.”
That made Remy chuckle. “Does that happen often?”
“More than I’d like. I—” Autumn’s words cut off, and her expression went blank.
“Uh oh, she’s doing her thing again,” Devon said.
“What thing?”
Devon sighed. “This is what she was talking about. She gets revenge visions from those she is supposed to help and sort of zones out. It tends to scare people.”
Starla didn’t think it was scary. It was simply part of Autumn’s abilities. Being able to get revenge for people was a good thing, and something to be proud of, not something to fear.
“Sorry, duty calls. I have to go. Come back to the bakery on Monday after class. I’ll tell Jordan to expect you. Laters,” Autumn said, then she disappeared.
“If you are going to be working here, you’ll get used to her popping in and out.” Devon picked up her tablet again. “Now, back to our feedback session. I have a list of questions I wanted to review with you.”
Over the next hour, Starla and Remy answered Devon’s countless questions about their experience using the Arcane Asist app. She was a little sad to discover the app would disappear from their phones soon, but Remy was relieved. The app had been meant to bring them together, and now that they were fully mated, there was no longer a need for it.
“Well, I think that’s it for now. I may have more questions for you later, especially after we send the app out to the next couple. Anything you want to ask me?”
“I do,” Remy said. “Why us? Why did you pick us to be your first test subjects?”
“It was fate…literally.” Devon laughed a little. “One of the Gods of Fate chose the two of you based on how strong your connection was. Even though you hadn’t met yet, he could tell you would bond the moment you met. That was a lot easier to deal with than a couple who tries to fight destiny.”
Starla thought about all of the revelations they’d learned while they said their goodbyes to Devon. At the door, the goddess handed them a bag containing all of the baked goods they hadn’t eaten over to Remy with a grin.
“Take it and share with your friends. I’m sure they are anxiously waiting for an update.”
When she gave a little wave in the direction of the pizza parlor, Starla and Remy both winced a little at getting caught. Of course, the goddess had known their friends were watching over them.
Starla took her mate’s free hand in hers, then waved goodbye to the goddess as they left the bakery. By getting a job at The Sweet Spot, she had a feeling that they would be seeing a lotmore of Devon and Autumn. But she still didn’t think she would ever get used to knowing a bunch of gods and goddesses.
“So, what do you think?” Remy asked as they walked.
She gave their arms a playful swing. “I think I got a job I wasn’t expecting.”
He laughed. “I think we got a lot of things we weren’t expecting tonight.”
Tugging him gently to a halt on the sidewalk, she wrapped her arms securely around his waist. Reflecting back, she realized that from the instant she chose to embrace her new life as a fairy rather than remain a pixie, it seemed that her destined course had always been leading her straight to her mate.
“Meeting you was the best thing I’ve ever done.”
“And loving you is the best thing I’ll ever do,” he said softly before leaning down to brush his lips over her.
As they kissed under a blanket of stars, Starla realized just how lucky she was.
Even with the certainty that fate had always intended them to be together, she couldn’t help but feel gratitude for the magical app. Without its intervention, who knew how long it might have taken for their paths to finally cross. The app hadn’t just given destiny a nudge in the right direction.
It had given them the gift of finding each other sooner.
And for that, she would always be grateful.
