Lifting Wren into my arms, I all but run back to the van, noticing Dex shoving a burger in his mouth as he holds the door open for us. I see a couple of bags in his hand and think that at least their time wasn’t entirely wasted in there. Leave it to Dex to get into a fight and not lose sight of his food.
As soon as Wren is buckled in and we’re back on the highway, I lean forward and smack Pete in the back of the head.
“Ow! What was that for!”
“For being a reckless idiot.”
“He touched her!” he yells back at me, his brows pinched with anger.
“Someone is likely to report what happened to the cops, they’ll review the camera footage, and recognize us. You basically just announced to the entire state that we’re here.”
I see the look of trepidation before he turns back to the front as realization of the repercussions of his actions seem to finally register.
“If it helps,” Dex says, breaking the silence. “I took this.” I glance over my shoulder, and he holds up a small black chip.
“What is that?”
He tosses it at me before shoving a fry in his mouth. “The memory card from their security system.”
I blink at him a few times, trying to understand, as he starts handing burgers over the seat to Wren to pass out to everyone.
Pete laughs as he takes his burger. “Dude! When the hell did you have the chance to do that?”
“When you threw the drink at the guy.”
“How did you even know where the security system was?”
“I scoped it out while I was guarding the bathroom door.” He shrugs as if it’s not a big deal.
Maybe Dex wasn’t as big of a moron as I thought he was. I certainly hadn’t thought of destroying the camera footage. I frown as I stare down at the chip in my hand.
Shit, I’m losing my touch if Dex is outsmarting me. It’s on the tip of my tongue to tell him he did a good job, but I can’t bring myself to offer him any praise. Wren already thinks he hangs the moon for her; I don’t want to help his reputation.
So instead, I take a bite of my burger to stop myself from commenting.
“Eat this,” Dex says, holding a fry over the seat for Wren to bite from his fingers. I freeze, jealousy coiling tightly in my stomach.
She chews happily, like she always does when she eats, then looks up at me with a big smile on her face as she reaches into the bag resting between us and holds up a French fry for me. “You want one, too?” she asks innocently, mistaking my jealousy for the fry and not her.
Amused, I wrap my mouth around the fry and her fingers, making sure to use my tongue to tease her a little. I see the spark of desire in her eyes as I pull back, satisfied with her reaction.
I need to remember that there’s no need to feel jealous, not as long as she has room for me in her heart, too. I have no doubt she has the biggest heart of anyone I’ve met. The way she cares for the other three lunatics in the vehicle and her psycho brother tells me as much.
After she finishes her meal and licks her fingers clean, she starts to eye my arm.
I lift it and beckon her closer. “Come on, then.” She beams at me, and my worry settles as she wiggles closer andleans against me. My arm comes to rest around her shoulders as I play with her soft hair.
She releases a long sigh, and knowing she feels content in my arms makes me feel a strange warmth in my chest. I rub at it absently. “Go to sleep, little bird.”
“Mmm, yes, sir.”
My cock jumps in my pants as I try to stay still, not wanting to disturb her.
Dex leans forward, his forearms resting on the seat as he stares down at her in admiration. “She’s perfect, isn’t she?”
A soft snore escapes her, and my lips twitch in amusement. I hum in agreement.
“You loved her calling you sir, didn’t you?” I think he’s accusing me of something, but when I glance at him, I see amusement in his eyes, not accusation. He shrugs. “You seem like the dominating type.”
