Laughing, she asks, “What are you doing at the zoo?”
“Another one of Ian’s planned dates,” I say, hearing how dreamy my voice sounds.
“Well, aren’t you smitten?” she remarks.
“Honestly, I am,” I agree.
“So the sex is good then?”
“Summer! Be quiet, there are kids around!” I say, making her laugh, pulling my AirPods from my hip pack I have slung across my chest.
“Now that they can’t hear me . . . So the sex is good then?” she repeats.
“You have no idea,” I say, feeling a blush creep onto my cheeks.
“I’m gonna need more details than that!”
“Summer, I’m at the zoo.” I say, with a giggle.
“Fine!” she says in a groan accompanied with an eye roll. “At least tell me he does the thing Lucas never wanted to do?” she asks with a hopeful look in her eyes.
“Regularly,” I answer.
“Damn!” she almost screams, flopping back onto the bed she was sitting on. “I can’t remember the last time my lady bits got any kind of action, much less any tongue action. I need to get laid!”
“Highly recommend,” I say smugly. “How are things going with that hot new doctor you were working with?”
“We’re not talking about him. How’s Levi doing?” she asks, changing the subject. Clearly something happened there; something bad if she changed the subject—she usually wants all the sex details.
I decide to let her change the topic. “Honestly, I’m not sure,” I say, looking around, spotting Ian ordering some food.
“How come? What’s going on?” she asks, concern etching itself on her face as she sits up straight against the headboard.
“You know Lacey?” I ask.
“Yeah, JJ’s younger sister,” she says, nodding her head, encouraging me to continue.
“Well, she and Levi have been spending a lot of time together. Like a crazy amount. And they were doing a bunch of couple-y things together, but for some reason they can’t be in the same room together this week.”
“That is weird. In his last email he didn’t say anything about them not talking, he just went on and on about her like a love sick puppy, like he usually does.”
“I tried asking him what’s going on and he says not to worry about it, that it’s between him and Lacey. I asked Lacey and she’s said same old same old, boys being boys. They’re both being evasive. But they did go out today. Ian had something planned for me, JJ had something for Ellie, and Levi had something planned for Lacey so clearly whatever the issue is it’s fairly new,” I say, catching her up on the entire situation.
“If they’re spending the day together it can’t be that bad.”
“I hope so. To say it’s been awkward the last few days would be an understatement.”
“Maybe I should call him,” Summer ponders.
“You should! Maybe hearing from his older sister will help him out.”
“Honestly, Hannah! You’re as much of a sister to him as I am. I mean, seriously, you’ve been in his life more lately than I have. If anything I’ve been a bad sister. I haven’t called him in forever.”
“You send him weekly emails; trust me when I say it’s all he needs. He is so proud of you—telling anyone that will listen that his sister is a badass doctor treating people in need.”
“Still, clearly there’s something going on with him, and we both know that tag-teaming him usually works.”
“I’ll keep working on him, promise. But maybe you should think of taking a vacation?”
