I breathe a sigh of relief as I look down at Marissa. I don’t know what her and I are, I don’t know if we’ll ever be anything. But right now, all I know, all I need to know is that she’s safe.

Chapter

Thirty-Seven

I’ve watched her sleep for hours. Five hours in, I was so worried that I called Maria to make sure it was normal for her to be out for so long. She assured me it was and that she would expect her to be out for another couple of hours or so. Relieved, I decided to head to the supermarket, grab some food for her and get back to be here when she wakes up. If she ever fucking wakes up.

Whatever Maria gave her is starting to wear off. Her breathing is a little lighter, and she’s starting to toss and turn a little. I lower myself onto the bed and pull her to me. I feel her body relax into me as I lean down, place a kiss on her forehead, and then tuck her hair behind her ear. She lets out a small moan, and her body shifts even closer to mine. It’s fucking messing with my head, having her this close to me. I don’t trust women, not since Chloe. There’s a part of me that wants to trust Marissa but I don’t know how.

I should walk away, end this now before either one of us gets any deeper. But I won’t. Not right now at least, not when I need to make sure she’s ok and make the fuckers that hurt her pay. I feel sick at the thought that the prospect and the brothers could have been too late. What if they had gotten there just a fewminutes later? What state would she have been in? The more I think about it, the more my anger bubbles to the surface.

I’m startled when she places her hand over my heart.

“Your heart’s racing,” she croaks out. “Are you ok?”

“I should be asking you that, Firecracker. Let me go get you some water.” I gently slip my arm from around her, making sure she’s comfortable before rushing off to the kitchen to grab her a drink. By the time I make it back she’s pushing herself into a sitting position.

“Jesus woman, can you not fucking wait for one minute?”

I rush over placing the glass on the bedside table and climbing onto the bed behind her, helping her to sit and rest her back against my front. I place the glass to her lips and gently tip it just enough for her to take a small drink.

“Thank you,” she tells me as she rests back against me. I kiss the top of her head and then place my arms around her.

“You feel like eating?”

She shakes her head. “No, thanks. Where is everyone?”

“They left. You’ve been out of it for almost ten hours, baby.”

I watch her waiting for a response, but she just closes her eyes and a few seconds later her breathing evens out as she drifts back off to sleep.

I hate the fact that I had to leave her sleeping. I’d left her a note and text her phone to tell her that I’d had to and that I would be back as soon as I could, but that the prospect was stood outside her front door waiting for her to wake up. I don’t want her leaving the flat without someone with her, and I don’t want her having to run around after herself, so I’d given explicit instructions to the prospect to make sure she ate and to stop her from leaving.

I didn’t expect to be gone as long as I have been. Another one of the Poisoned Devils was spotted in our territory again, sowe’ve spent the last two days chasing our tails hunting the fucker down without any luck.

I don’t bother knocking, letting myself into her flat I see her standing in the kitchen leaning over the counter talking to the prospect as he cooks her some food. They both turn to look at me.

“VP.” The prospect addresses me. “Gears said you were on your way, give me fifteen minutes the stir-fry will be done. I hope you’re ok with beef.” It wasn’t a question, he was letting me know that’s what he was making. It’s good of the kid to make me food too. I give him a nod then turn to her. She gives me a small smile and I can’t wait any longer, less than two strides and I’m on her pulling her into me, grabbing her face and slamming my lips on to hers. She hesitates for just a second but as I hold her tighter, she relents and kisses me back.

She grinds her hips into me letting me know what she wants, I’d love nothing more than to fuck her, but I want to make sure she’s fed and then we need to talk before that happens. I won’t fuck her until I’m sure she’s ok with it.

Chapter

Thirty-Eight

Wrath kicked the Prospect out after dinner. I thought once he did that, we’d finally get around to having sex, but he’s just sat with me on the sofa watching some shit on TV and it’s pissing me off. I throw the odd glance his way, but he doesn’t react, his hardened gaze fixed on the screen. Deciding to take matters into my own hands I stand from the sofa.

“Where you going?” he asks as I go to walk away.

“Just grabbing a drink. Would you like one?”

“No thanks baby,” he tells me and turns back to the TV.

I sigh as I grab a glass of water, downing half of it before refilling it and heading back. l take another sip and then place the glass on the table, I stop in front of him, blocking his view of the TV. His head tips back and he quirks an eyebrow as he looks up at me in question. I lick my lips and climb onto of him, straddling him. He reaches out and grabs my sides holding onto me softly.

I lean down and kiss him. Gently at first, but the longer we kiss the more aggressive it gets. Our teeth clash as we battle for control. His hands run up my back, he grips the back of my neck and pulls me into him. His cock hardens underneath me, and Iroll my hips. He groans as I grind into him. A few seconds later and his grip on my neck tightens as he pulls me away.

“Firecracker, wait.”
