I won’t come right out and ask that, of course. At least I don’t think I will. But I might have to.

Because Summer has been all over me for the past two days, begging me to get in the tiny hospital bed with her at night. Not that I’m complaining. But it’s putting me in the position where I have to be the voice of reason, and that’s something I haven’t had a lot of experience with.

I join her in bed and hold her.But I decline to do anything else—for her sake.I talk her down, tell her she has to let her body heal, and then go off and take my three cold showers a day.

Whoever claimed that cold showers were the answer was out of their damn mind. Those chilly episodes haven’t done shit to stop me from wanting her.

From needing her.

Especially now that I almost lost her.All I want to do is cradle her in my arms and make love to her, join our bodies, mesh together.

“I didn’t understand much of what you just said, Doctor,” Summer says. The doctor nods slowly, turns off the monitor, and slips his pen back into his lab coat pocket.

He’s an affable neurologist I had flown in from Dallas.I got his name from Mason Travis, Phoebe’s brother the professional MMA fighter.Doctor Lavenda has worked on a lot of fighters, and Mason said he’s the best.

It cost a fortune to fly him out here, and he was worth every penny.

“Sorry,” he tells Summer.“I used a lot of words to say that you’re a very lucky woman with a very hard head and seriously strong bones. The swelling is completely down, and there’s no sign of brain damage. You didn’t even have any fractures. And so I’m prescribing two weeks of good books and bad television, and then you can get back to your life full-time.”He puts his finger up in the air.“That said, if you have any problems with your vision, unusual headaches, or dizziness, you give me a call.In any case, I’ll see you again in a month for a checkup.Sound good?”

“Sounds great!”she exclaims.

She throws me a look that fills my heart almost to bursting.Joy fills me and I explode in laughter.Summer offers me her fist, and I bump it.She laughs, and as she turns her body towards me, she grips her abdomen and doubles over.

“What the—?”Summer hisses in pain. She’s not moving.“Oh shit.”

The doctor flies to her side.“What is it?”

She takes a couple deep breaths with her hand on her lower abdomen, then dares to look up at him.“It’s nothing.”Her voice is stretched thin.“I’m… I must be getting my period. It happens to me all the time.”

Doctor Lavenda looks down at her and then at me.“This is not the half of the body that I usually deal with.I’m going to order a scan for you and bring somebody else in on this.”

“Nuh-uh,” Summer says and swings her legs over the side of the bed.“You said I could leave.”

He puts his hand on her shoulder.“After the scan.It won’t take long.Sit tight so we can all have peace of mind, all right?”

Summer shakes her head.“I want to get out of here.I want to live my life.”

“After the scan,” I tell her.“We can get root beer floats.”

“And get naked.”

I laugh.“That too.Sorry, Doc.”

“No need to apologize.I like to hear that my patient is full of energy and rarin’ to go.Butafterthe scan.”

He leaves the room, and I help Summer get back on her bed.“I could diddle you under the covers, if you want,” I suggest.

“We could go into the bathroom and diddle each other.”

“That sounds like a better idea.”

“We could start with a kiss.”

“Which body part?”I ask.

“All of them, of course.Duh.”

“Duh,” I agree.
