‘Would that have anything to do with Noah?’

Elle sighed. ‘It’s silly really.’

‘Come on, tell me.’

‘I really like him – I always have.’

‘And the problem with that is?’

‘The distance. If we did start seeing each other, would it just be limited to weekends?’

Pippa raised her eyebrows. ‘Are you seriously worried about that?’

Elle nodded.

‘It’s very early days. Take one day at a time, and don’t forget he’s a writer.’

‘What do you mean by that?’

‘Surely he can write anywhere. It’s not as though he works in an office and has set hours. He could even write in the library and you could swoon over him from the reception desk. You really are overthinking this.’

‘I hadn’t thought of that,’ Elle replied, mulling over Pippa’s words.

‘That’s because you’re too busy thinking of all the reasons why it might not work.’

‘Sometimes I wish I was more like you. You’re so confident around men.’

‘Focus on each day and what will be will be.’

‘One day at a time.’

‘One day at a time,’ Pippa repeated, with a slight smile.

‘When did you become the wise one?’ Elle nudged her with her elbow.

‘Since wearing these glasses.’

They both laughed.

Fifteen minutes later, they stepped off the bus at the bottom of Love Heart Lane. Elle tilted her face up towards the sunshine. ‘Thunderstorms yesterday, bright sunshine today.’

‘It certainly makes everything seem a lot brighter.’

‘Good morning, ladies.’ Aiden had sneaked up on them as they walked up the drive of Foxglove Farm towards the library.

They both jumped and turned around. Aiden was rustling two white paper bags.

He grinned. ‘One for you and one for you.’

‘Oooh, what’s in there?’ Pippa exclaimed, taking her bag from him and peeping inside.

‘A warm pain au chocolat, fresh from Bonnie’s Teashop.’

‘Thank you,’ said Elle, taking the bag. She noticed Wilson parking his van at the side of the library.

‘You two go on in,’ she insisted, handing the keys to Pippa. ‘I just need a quick word with Wilson.’
