The doors swung open and a paramedic made his way over to Eleni.
‘She’s pregnant,’ Jenny announced immediately.
‘And I think I’m bleeding,’ Eleni sobbed.
His manner was calm as he asked Eleni a series of questions before taking her blood pressure and strapping her to a chair.
‘You’re in the best possible hands,’ Elle tried to reassure her.
‘Please can you come with me in the ambulance?’ Eleni asked.
‘Of course.’
The paramedic lifted her into the back of the ambulance and started hooking her up to a machine.
Elle turned back to Jenny and Pippa. ‘If I go in the ambulance, are you all okay to follow in a taxi?’
‘Yes, of course,’ they said in unison.
‘Can you pass me my bag?’ Elle asked, nodding towards the chair in front of the stage door. Right at that moment, the door opened and a group of girls who were hovering nearby started squealing as they recognised Dan stepping onto the street. His eye caught Elle’s then his expression quickly turned to one of concern as he clocked the ambulance.
‘Are you ready?’ the ambulance driver asked Elle, ushering her inside. Grabbing her bag, she glanced back at Dan and noticed someone else standing next to him. She did a double take as her eyes locked with Noah Jones’s. He was standing only a few steps away from her.
‘Elle,’ he mouthed, but she didn’t have time to respond. The ambulance door was slammed shut and they sped off towards the hospital, sirens blaring.
ChapterTwenty-Seven
As soon as they arrived at the hospital, they whisked Eleni off up the corridor and into a room out of sight. She’d spent the journey with her eyes shut tight and hadn’t spoken. Elle kept hold of her hand the whole time. Even though Elle hoped she was wrong, there were signs that Eleni might have already miscarried.
Pippa and Jenny arrived five minutes after the ambulance and found Elle in the waiting room, holding a cup of coffee. Mim and Jack were both on their way.
‘I don’t know what to say,’ Pippa said softly.
Jenny shook her head. ‘Me neither.’
‘Jack should be here soon. Has anyone heard from him since he jumped in the taxi?’ asked Elle.
Pippa pointed. ‘He’s here now.’
Jack rushed through the doors, quickly followed by Aiden and Wilson.
‘Where is she?’ he demanded. His cheeks were flushed and he was close to tears.
Aiden and Wilson lingered behind him.
‘They’ve taken her through to a room. I’ll let the nurse know you’re here,’ Jenny said, patting his arm and hurrying over to the reception desk at the far end of the room.
‘How is she?’ Tears brimmed in his eyes.
‘She’s in a lot of pain. One minute she was okay and the next…’
‘I feel so helpless,’ he murmured.
Jenny hurried back over to them. ‘The nurse is coming now and she’ll take you to Eleni. In fact, here she is.’
They all watched Jack disappear up the corridor.
‘This is not a good end to the night.’ Wilson kissed his mum on the cheek and sat down on the chair next to her.
